Capital District YMCA Continues its Begathon!

The Capital District YMCA has sent out yet another SPAM mailing asking members to contact their legislators, and to urge them to pass a bill that will release $60 billion to non-profits to offset their alleged losses due to COVID-19!

They have no shame, that’s how.
You’re not getting any handouts, are you?
They have no shame!

How can these greedy parasites ask for money to offset losses that are impossible to estimate this early in time? It’s a Perfect Scam!

Here’s an excerpt from the Capital District YMCA’s propaganda email:

YMCAs and our charitable organization partners are asking Congress to pass $60 billion in support for nonprofits and to pass key policy recommendations to support the efforts of nonprofits on the ground.

The previous SPAM mail from the CDYMCA read like this:

They [legislators] need to hear from you about the importance of significant funding to help YMCAs statewide cover the costs associated with full-time and part-time employees, as well as the loss of membership, programming and donation revenue.

The YMCAs statewide need to learn how to operate like other businesses across the state and the nation, who cannot SPAM their customers begging them to ask legislators to bail them out! Normal tax-paying businesses and homeowners are too busy trying to figure out how to meet their tax burdens NOW, since tax bills are out and the government has their hairy hands out for our checks! If they can’t keep their heads above water, then they have to learn how to swim like the rest of us.

Can you imagine going to a state or federal tax audit and claiming losses without hard figures to back you up? Can you imagine going to your legislators as a small or medium business and crying that you lost customers and donation revenue because of Coronavirus, but you don’t have any proof or documentation? They’d laugh you out the door into the parking lot!

Veterans, elderly, the chronically ill, the uninsured, people without healthcare need those $60 billion; most of them are veterans and taxpayers, and unlike CDYMCA CEO David Brown, are not pulling more than $330,000 in salary from the non-profit. By the way, how much is Erin Breslin making, the Sr. VP for Membership, now that she’s slashed the veterans discount in half?

Shame on you, CDYMCA, and all your non-profit tax-avoiders with you!

No, NO, NO! Absolutely not!
No freebies for greedy non-profits, non-taxpayers!

We’ve contacted legislators and veterans agencies demanding that they take action.

  • Charles E. Schumer, US Senator
  • Kirsten Gillibrand, US Senator
  • Neil D. Breslin, State Legislator
  • John T. McDonald III, State Legislator
  • George A. Amedore, Jr., State Legislator
  • Chris Tague, State Legislator
  • Greene County Veterans Service Bureau
  • Albany County Veterans Service Bureau

Albany County alone has more than 20,000 veterans, who need to be informed and show their anger in the upcoming elections! Come November, use your vote to sanitize and exterminate all the snakes, rats, and cockroaches from our communities, government, everywhere!

The day after election day 2020!

Cap District YMCA: Shameless Arrogance … AGAIN!!!

Stop the Scams!

We recently reported on the Capital District YMCA’s shameless slashing of veterans discounts by 50%, increasing veterans’ memberships up to 50%; one member reported his monthly dues went from $26 to $39/month! We also reported that despite numerous complaints and follow-up, Erin Breslin, Sr. Director of Marketing and Membership, the CDYMCA executive responsible for the reduction in the veterans discount, refused to reconsider their shameful decision. (See our report at YMCA DISGRACE!!! Veterans targeted by YMCA action.)

Senior Director of Marketing and Membership at Capital District YMCA

Shameless and Arrogant!!!

Capital District YMCA Wants NY Legislators to Funnel More Taxpayer Dollars into the Non-profit. We say: Let their execs, who are making 6-figure salaries take a pay cut first!!! CEO C. David Brown pulls more than $330,000 a year, while other execs pull their 6-figures.
NO MORE TAXPAYER DOLLARS!!! PAY YOUR FAIR SHARE!!!

We also recently reported on the incredible fact that the CDYMCA has tens of millions of dollars in property assets in the Capital District but doen’t pay a dime in property tax! We further reported that CDYMCA president and CEO, C. David Brown pulls in more than $330,000 a year in salary, while other executives are pulling 6-figure salaries. Yet the CDYMCA is registered as a non-profit organization and doesn’t pay a dime in property taxes! (See our report at Capital District YMCA: Millions in Assets, Pays No Tax!.)

J.D. Brown Exec Dir CDYMCA, refused to respond.

We reported that the CDYMCA calls itself a charity but charges above-market rates for memberships while also charging market or above-market rates for some of their programs. Yet they don’t pay a dime in tax!

Today, on March 17, 2020, the Capital District YMCA sent out an Action Alert that reads:

ACTION ALERT
Act to protect YMCAs during the COVID-19 crisis!
Dear Advocate,

The New York State Legislature plans to vote on legislation today to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Tell them that your Ys need a COVID-19 package that supports the YMCA. You can take part in this advocacy by sending this important letter to your legislators. They need to hear from you about the importance of significant funding to help YMCAs statewide cover the costs associated with full-time and part-time employees, as well as the loss of membership, programming and donation revenue.

Please write to your state legislators today!

Enough is enough, already!!! This is getting really sickening!!!

The CDYMCA’sexecutives, Erin Breslin (CDYMCA executive), David Brown (CDYMCA CEO/President), Carl Oropallo (Executive Director), Mark Thurman (Director, Operations, Bethlehem), received a communication this week, after David Brown, the guy pulling more than $330,000 in salary, broadcast a message to Y members that the CDYMCA facilities would be closed for one week for “deep cleaning.” Those executives were asked one simple question: Would members’ accounts be credited for that week that they could not use the facilities? No one from the CDYMCA has answered that question but we’re pretty certain what the answer is.

What is this “deep cleaning” thing, anyway. A facility like the CDYMCAshould have extraordinary hygiene and sanitary measures in place as routine! The cleaning agents and disinfectants they use in the pools, locker rooms, workout areas should all be sufficient to kill just about anything! Sick people don’t work out or take aerobic exercise classes. Normally, the rule of most gym etiquette is to wipe down equipment after use using disinfectants that should be provided. (We are informed that the disinfectant and paper towels are provided for this purpose at commercial fitness clubs and at the Y. The problem is, personnel don’t enforce the practice.)So what’s this deep cleaning that’s going on for a week?

Editor’s aside: According to our information based on research of the recommendations for what so-called “deep cleaning” involves, the CDYMCA is again playing with terms. There are a number of deep cleaning methods currently being employed to minimize the spread of COVID-19, and none of them, ranging from airlines to the New York Stock Exchange, involve shutting down for an entire week. In fact, the deep cleaning being done involves mainly high contact surfaces, which should be routine day-to-day cleaning practices in a place like a fitness center or a YMCA. First and foremost, the most effective preventive measure is to avoid contact with individuals who have clear symptoms of cough, sneeze, or fever of undermined origin. But that’s common sense! Social distancing, even if around asymptomatic persons, is also proving to be effective but Americans are already socially distanced, so that’s a no-brainer! Self-isoation or self-quarantine is the ultimate step for individuals who know they have been in contact with a symptomatic individual, or an area in which symptomatic individuals have been, or who have traveled to endemic areas, or have symptoms or have been diagnosed with a viral infection or infection with COVID-19. Persons-at-increased-risk, that is persons who are at increased risk of infection generally, are well-advised to stay clear of crowds. When in doubt, call your pubic health hot-line or consult your doctor. So what is the CDYMCA doing for a so-called deep clean that is over and above their normal sanitizing? We’ll ask them and see if they come up with anything. (Sources: “How Big Businesses Get a Deep Clean” (New York Times article; “Ships, Planes And Other Spots Are Getting A ‘Deep Clean.’ What’s That Mean?” (NPR article), both last accessed on March 17, 2020.)

The CDC and World Health Organization have reported that the virus doesn’t survive long on surfaces that have not been disinfected; isn’t it reasonable that the virus would survive for an even shorter time on disinfected surfaces, if at all? (See our report on COVID-19 at Smalbany Statement on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic.)
But let’s get back to the shameless Action Alert broadcast today by the non-profit, non-taxpaying Capital District YMCA:
That message reads: “They (state legislators) need to hear from you about the importance of significant funding to help YMCAs statewide cover the costs associated with full-time and part-time employees, as well as the loss of membership, programming and donation revenue.” That’s absolutely ridiculous!
In 2018, the CDYMCAincreased every member’s monthly dues by $1, which adds up to a hefty amount each month. Then in 2019, they slashed veterans discounts by 50%, adding more to their pockets! Now the greedy bastards are asking members to write to legislators to ask that they now give taxpayer dollars to support a non-taxpaying glutton to help cover costs!!!
We say: Any legislator who votes to support this shameless expression of greed and unfairness in our tax system should be run out of the Legislature!!! We have a better idea: Mr C. David Brown, Ms Erin Breslin, Mr Marc Thurman, Mr Carl Oropallo, and their coworkers should take a pay cut!!! How’s that for an idea?
For an organization that contributes nothing to the pubic treasury by being wholly tax-exempt to ask taxpayers and legislators to provide more funds to them to cover costs is one of the most shameful and arrogant things to come from them yet!
The non-profit scam in New York and around the country needs to be reexamined, revised, and most of the scammers need to start paying their fair share of property taxes.

Easton Mountain, Cambridge, NY
A Gay Retreat Community
A Non-profit Organization

We contacted the Washington County District Attorney’s office some time ago with an inquiry about this place; we never got a response.
There’s a sex camp for gay men in Cambridge, NY, called Easton Mountain. They operate facilities on several acres of prime property with a number of newly renovated buildings and grounds. They claim to be the gay community’s gift to the world but Easton Mountain is the gay community’s gift to the organizers and staff of Easton Mountain. They claim their non-profit status on the basis of spiritual and charity-related work but when you look at their programs, which include neotantra (= so-called sacred sex), intimacy training, orgasm training, erotic massage, even a phony “diploma” course offered by the visiting Brit, etc., and the cost of those programs, upwards of $400 to more than $1000 for a week (5 nights) program!!!They even import some phony sex guru from the UK to facilitate some of their events! We’ll be looking at their filings and report on how much government support they receive in lieu of paying taxes. Did you know that your tax dollars are going to organizations like that? (The most published recent financials, the IRS 990 dates back to 2014!)  See our articles: Tantra or Sex Services? (5/2019), The Follow-up (6/2019), Sex for Sale: The Follow-up II (7/2019).
,

We will obtain the voting information and report who in the New York State Legislature votes to funnel more taxpayer money to the CDYMCA and non-profit scammers like them. We’ll publish the names of those legislators who voted to send your tax dollars to the scammers. And we’ll remind you of their freewheeling and dealing when elections roll around.
In the meantime, we urge you, our many readers to support us in our own Action Alert, and to contact your legislators and warn them if they give another dime away to tax scamming non-profits who can afford to pay their executives and directors six-figure salaries, the legislators are going to be looking for jobs!!!

PAY YOUR SHARE, YMCA!!!

Capital District YMCA: Millions in Assets, Pays No Tax!

Local Organizations Head the List!

It’s tax time again and you are being held hostage by your Assessor, the government, and the “gimme-s.” Yes, you’re probably agonizing over how much property tax, school tax, income tax, and indirect tax you are going to be held liable for. You have no choice but to pay; otherwise you’ll face incredible penalties, interest, and even loss of your property and garnished earnings. You can only hope that you get to keep some of your earnings and enjoy your property without going to the poor house. “Liberty and justice for all” goes to hell in a hand-basket at tax time; forget all the sweet words and “Welcome to reality!”

Costs to taxpayers increase while services are either curtailed or discontinued altogether. You still have to pay, whether you get the services or not. Downsizing services or product contents while keeping the price the same is nothing new in the scammer’s toolbox. A can of coffee used to be 16 oz; container’s the same but contains 14 oz. Same price.

Here’s another local scam for you: Did you know that local cable service provider MidHudson Cable has discontinued its email service, which for years was part of the cable package offered by the rinky-dink provider based in Catskill, NY. Have any of the local Albany County and Greene County subscribers noticed any decrease in their monthly cable bills since MidHudson discontinued their email services? Very unlikely, indeed. MidHudson has not decreased your bill. But you will certainly have noticed the regular nickle-and-dime gouging increases that appear on your cable bill at regular intervals.

Every property owner has to pay property tax, a good portion of which goes to school tax to educate young people in elementary, middle, and high-school. The school tax is paid ONLY by property owners; everyone else gets to enjoy the benefits without paying. But even those residents who don’t pay property tax get to vote on the school budget. Fair? Right?

This is particularly unfair to many mid-life and older property owners who have no children in the schools, and to business property owners, who don’t get to vote on the school budget. For your information, the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District budget for 2020 is more than $48 million! Yes, you read that correctly, $48 million. You should really be wondering what you’re getting for all that dough! Well, about 75% of that money goes to salaries and benefits for teachers and employees. Then there’s upkeep and maintenance of buildings and equipment. Doesn’t leave much for education, does it? And it shows, doesn’t it?[1]

Everyone has to pay taxes. Well, almost everyone. You see there are some very, very rich organizations in the Capital District Region who don’t pay a dime in property tax. There are quite a few non-profit organizations in the Albany area, about 3,800 nonprofits totaling more than $14 billion in assets.[2] And they don’t pay a dime in tax!

A 2017 Times Union article,

The Capital Region has thousands of nonprofits receiving contributions from private citizens. This list is drawn from the most recent available IRS Form 990s, which nonprofits file annually declaring revenues and expenses. Government funding was excluded. The list also excludes universities, colleges, nursing homes, hospitals and government-affiliated nonprofits. Hospital foundations are included, as they are separate organizations.”

It’s important to note that the TU list does not include universities, colleges, nursing homes, hospitals and government-affiliated non-profits in the “thousands of non-profits.” And they don’t pay a dime in tax! Interestingly, the Albany Medical Center Foundation is reported to be the #1 recipient, having received more than $14 million dollars in contributions in the reporting period!

We recently reported on the Capital District YMCA, a local non-profit organization, when the Y slashed the veterans discount by 50% in October-November 2019, increasing many veterans’ membership fees by 50%. For example, one veteran contacted us and reported that he had been paying $26/month in Y membership fees but when the veterans discount was halved, he ended up paying $39/month in dues! That’s a 50% increase imposed on veterans by a non-profit organization that pays no taxes. Nice show of American gratitude towards their veterans, right?

CDYMCA Propaganda

“The Capital District YMCA offers facilities in Albany, Bethlehem, Duanesburg, Glenville, Greenbush, Greene County, Guilderland, Schenectady, Southern Saratoga, & Troy! With top-notch facilities, programs, and childcare, the Y has whatever you need!” Really? Sounds like marketing hype to us; just like tax-paying businesses put out there to draw customers.

There seems to be a problem with the CDYMCA receiving government aid in addition to receiving tax-exempt status. Historically, the United States government and state governments have avoided supporting religion or religion-related organizations. You’ve all heard of the separation of church and state, right? Does your church receive government support of its programs? But the CDYMCA does state in it’s mission statement: “To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.” What about Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim principles? Oh! We understand now. The “Christian” principles that the CDYMCA put into practice include greed, hypocrisy, exclusivity, misinformation, etc. You know, all those values we see in politics and government, and in business in this country. We understand that the other religions and belief traditions do not support those key “Christian” principles.

We have information that the Y received numerous complaints in response to the reduction in Veterans’ discounts, and our informant also tells us that despite numerous communications to the Capital District YMCA requesting that the savings to veterans be reinstated, the Y refused to consider reinstating the veterans discount.

Senior Director of Marketing and Membership at Capital District YMCA

All credit for slapping veterans in the face goes to Erin Breslin, Sr Director of Membership, CDYMCA. Not only the name is gender-ambiguous. There’s a lot of ambiguity about stinky-pants Breslin and her gang at CDYMCA. They preach one thing and do another. That’s called hypocrisy where I come from, not charity. But Breslin is unashamed and arrogant. She claims the decision to slash the veterans benefit was a good decision and refuses to reinstate the veterans discount. She takes all the credit, although we doubt she had the decision power to make the decision on her own. She is, after all, just a lackey. But even a lackey in her position must be pulling at least $80-100+ K in salary out of the so-called charity. But we should be looking more closely at J. David Brown, the overpaid, grossly overpaid CEO of the CDYMCA, who is laughing his way to the bank collecting a cool $330,000 salary! So that’s where all the contributions and non-taxable assets are going? That’s quite the scam, don’t you think?

We have correspondence, letters and emails, that were sent by the member to executives at the CDYMCA, including J. David Brown, President/CEO, CDYMCA, Carl Oropallo, District Executive Director, Shawn Dilbert St. James, Membership Director (Bethlehem Branch), and to Erin Breslin, Sr. Director of Marketing and Membership, who was responsible for the outrageous action taken against veterans but none responded, except for Breslin, who refused to reinstate the benefit. We’d like to hear from Ms Breslin on this subject. We’d like to hear her side of the story. Wouldn’t you?

J.D. Brown Exec Dir CDYMCA, refused to respond.
His salary: $330,633.00!

We’d like to hear from Mr J. David Brown on this subject, particularly why he’s worth more than $330K in salary as CEO of a so-called “charity”. We’d like to hear her side of the story. Wouldn’t you? It’s no wonder Breslin had increase every member’s monthly dues by $1, and to slash the veterans benefit discount in half; how else could they pay themselves such outrageous salaries?!?

Hall of Shame: CDYMCA, Erin Breslin, J. David Brown.

The Capital District YMCA operates a number of facilities in the Capital Region and claims in most of their propaganda to be a “charity,” which they definitely are NOT. Since when does a charity charge membership fees? Since when does a charity charge for its programs? The CDYMCA is misinforming the public when they call themselves a charity.

The correct tax department terminology is an organization with “a charitable purpose,” a definition that fall far short of being a charity.

Here’s an example of some of the deceptive practices of the CDYMCA: they accept donations from members and patrons around holiday periods but take credit for distributing the holiday gifts, they don’t provide the gifts, they just distribute them. Many of the CDYMCA programs are for-fee programs, participation is for an additional charge which may be quite considerable. Consider that some of the offerings posted read “Members $50, Non-members $75.” By the way, charities donot have “members,” clubs do and clubs charge membership dues, just like the so-called CDYMCA charity.

Futhermore, the CDYMCA claims to support local organizations and businesses…for a fee, that is. We have information that at least one local facility held a get-to-know-your-local-businesses event, and announced that it was in support of local business. What they did not tell the public is that local businesses had to pay $30 just to participate. A charity?

Well, people, here’s the clincher: The Capital District YMCA has total assets of more than $55 million dollars!!! And they don’t pay a dime in property tax. They are shown under the Fully Exempt section of the local tax rolls!

Now, if you had property assets of $55 million, how much property tax do you think you’d be paying? Any idea what your assessment might look like? Any idea of how much school tax $55 million would generate? Any idea of how many community and school programs would be supported by tax on $55 million in property assets? Well, as far as the CDYMCA and organizations like it, the amount is about $00. NOTHING. How’s that grab ya?

The whole idea of non-profit organization under state and federal tax codes is a complete joke! It’s a farce. The executives, for example, at the CDYMCA receive 5- and 6-figure salaries, comparable to private corporations. In 2018, they up-ed across-the-board membership dues by $1/month to cover “increases” in employee costs. That amounts to quite a bit of money each month, and we assume quite a bit of an increase in employee benefits at the CDYMCA that calls itself a “charity.”

Hey, Taxpayers!
How do you feel about this? Like the suckers you are?

If you operated a business or a corporation and you had $55 million in assets you’d likely be paying a good amount of taxes of every kind. And you’d have to generate the funds to pay those taxes, too. Take for example, corporate chain health and fitness clubs like Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness operates fitness facilities nationwide, just like the YMCA does. Planet Fitness offers many of the services that the YMCA offers. Planet Fitness is a franchise-based corporation, a for-profit business, but their memberships run from about $10/month for local facility use to about $20/month for the so-called Black-Card, which entitles members to use any Planet Fitness facility in the US.[3] Last time we looked, Planet Fitness paid fair wages and salaries and paid considerable taxes on their propreties. So, we’d like to ask, how is it that the CDYMCA who provides comparatively similar services as, say, Planet Fitness, charges up to 4-times as much for membership and pays no taxes? How is it that a low-income veteran on fixed income, no assets, has to pay twice the Planet Fitness premier membership (est. $20/month) for a regular membership ($39/month) at the CDYMCA? That just doesn’t add up. If you don’t see something wrong with this picture, get your eyes examined!

There’s a scam going on here. There’s a very big scam going on here, and organizations like the YMCA are profiting hugely at the expense of communities, service providers, and even the government. Yes, the government. You see, in the reporting year covering the period of April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018, not only did the CDYMCA report more than $55 million in assets but they also reported having received

  • more than $2.7 million in grants
  • more than $36.2 million in program services revenues
  • more than $245,000 in investment income
  • more than $370,000 in “other income”

totalling more than $39.5 million in income in addition to the $55 million in assets.[4]

Not a charity by any standard.

We chose the Capital District YMCA (CDYMCA) for another good reason: In addition to misinforming the public of their status and by not openly disclosing their assets, they are hijacking the legacy of what used to be a real community organization with real values. They have perverted that legacy in many ways, not the least of which is by claiming non-profit status, claiming to be a “charity,” and claiming to “build community,” which they do not do, and cannot truthfully claim to do.

Although the most damning point made in this report is the fact that the CDYMCA has enormous assets and income but doesn’t pay a dime in tax is but one issue we should be outraged by. But the fact that they have the arrogance to target a vulnerable population like our veterans to accrue more profit and feed their greed is downright shameful! Anyone who out of one side of their face will praise the courage and sacrifices made by American veterans should be up in arms about what the CDYMCA has done.

Furthermore, in this election year, Veterans organizations and our elected officials should be taking a very close and critical look at organizations like the CDYMCA claiming “non-profit” or “charity” status, while holding tens of millions in assets, while the rest of us are paying taxes through our noses!

Think about that, why don’t you? Leave a comment about what you think about this situation.

And if you haven’t read our original article about the slashing of the veterans discount, read it here: YMCA DISGRACE!!! Veterans targeted by YMCA action.

Yes, it’s an election year! We will be contacting legislators and veterans organizations about this outrageous abuse of veterans by the Capital District YMCA, and we’ll be reporting back to our readers about the politicians’ responses, if any, and the response of the organizations who claim to stand for veterans’ interests. Stay tuned!

[4] And to be fair, they do have their exorbitant, outrageous executive salaries to pay out of that income, as well as their employee wages, and benefits. But they’re still making a killing! And not paying a dime in tax.

YMCA DISGRACE!!! Veterans targeted by YMCA action.

You better believe it!
We’re comin’ to get you!
Where will you be when the smoke clears?

Smalbany has been following this story since November 2019. We have new information and will be publishing our follow-up on about January 15, 2020. Bottom Line: The Capital District YMCA refuses to restore the Veterans discount on adult and senior memberships. We will challenge their claim to be a “charity,” and hit them by challenging their non-profit status! Stay tuned!

SHAME ON THE CAPITAL DISTRICT YMCA!!!

The Capital District Y Slashes Veterans Discount

With the White House declaring November as Veterans Month, and all of the talk about how America honors, respects, and loves their veterans, one of America’s premier non-profits, the Young Men’s Christian Association or YMCA, targets Veterans by slashing the Y’s Veterans discount. In August, the Capital District YMCA, a non-profit organization that pays no taxes, cut their Veterans discount not by 10%, not by 20% but by 50%. The measure took effect in October. That’s how the YMCA honors this country’s Veterans.

White House declares all of November as Veterans and Military Families month.
(Susan Walsh/AP)

President Trump urged communities to “honor the service, sacrifices, and contributions of veterans and military families for what they have done and for what they do every day to support our great nation.” (Read the entire article at: President Declares November Veterans Month) In contrast, the Capital District YMCA slashes their discount offered to Veterans.

A reader wrote to us in October, in amazement, when he discovered that his monthly YMCA membership was increased by 50% in October, going from $26.00 to $39.00. Read what he has to say:

“I was flabbergasted when I called the Y to find out why my debit account showed a $39.00 payment to the Capital District YMCA, when it is normally $26.00.

“When I got to speak to someone in the accounts department, the woman told me that they had changed the Veterans discount; that a letter was mailed out in August. I explained that I was not aware of any letter announcing such a huge increase, and that I was very unhappy to learn that they had targeted Veterans, of all people.

The Accounts person offered to connect me to the “marketing manager”, Erin Breslin, to voice my outrage. I declined the opportunity, opting instead to write to Smalbany and to legislators and veterans organizations.

“I was incensed because just last year the YMCA announced that there would be a $1 per month increase in everyone’s membership due to salaries and benefits. That I could swallow. But this latest despicable action by the YMCA taken against Veterans is scandalous!

“I am on a tight fixed income and have to budget every penny. I maintain good health by regular exercise and was willing to make the sacrifice of the $26 each month to keep my YMCA membership. The halving of the Veterans discount increases my monthly Y payment to $36, which is a 50% increase! That $13 increase puts a strain on an already strained household, believe it or not. Even if it did not, it is a scandalous increase targeting Veterans.

“The YMCA has millions in tax-exempt assets. As a tax-exempt, non-profit it receives many gifts and bequests from people with fortunes, and the Y pays no tax on their property, while the donor can deduct a substantial amount from his or her taxable income.

One final point: Smalbany has written a couple of articles about Planet Fitness and its faults. Two years ago, before I switched to the Y, I was a black-card member at Planet Fitness, which entitled me to visit any location nationwide and included a number of fringe benefits. I paid about $21 each month for that membership. I joined the Y and paid about $5 more but still could use any Y facility. That was OK. Now, for the same services, I’m paying twice as much! I’m paying twice as much to a so-called community organization. I’m paying twice as much to an organization that pays no taxes!!! Say what you like about Planet Fitness, at least they pay taxes!

“This action by a very rich organization that pays no taxes, against a vulnerable population like Veterans, is a disgrace! The IRS, the Veterans Administration, Veterans organizations, Military associations, Congress, the NYS Senate and Assembly, EVERYONE should shame the YMCA for this unprecedented attack on Veterans!”

We could not believe this is happening, and we did not publish it sooner because we had to do some research and check some information. IT’s TRUE! [Editor’s Note: The information was confirmed with the Capital District YMCA. The Veterans discount, misleadingly called a “scholarship” by the Y, was reduced from 50% to 25% for veterans and senior adult memberships. Looks like they hit both veterans and seniors with this move. SHAME!]

The actual letter sent out some time in August 2019 is a bit vague and ambiguous, and doesn’t really come straight out and say that the discount is being reduced, which in fact is what happened. The letter simply states a load of political crapola about all the good the Y does and simply says : “Beginning this October, the savings for our veterans will change to 25% savings on the cost of an adult (or senior adult) membership.” Nothing to warn of a reduction and an increase in the cost of membership to seniors and veterans!.

Click here to read the actual August Letter: YMCA Veterans Discount Slashed

There seems to be a troubling pattern in the Capital District YMCA’s communications to members announcing many of the Y’s more sinister plans and measures: their letters appear to be intentionally vague and ambiguous, probably to avoid immediate protest and outcry.. According to a report on the Grand Street Community Arts site, “The wording of the release was very vague according to all who have read it.” We have to ask ourselves whether this so-called “community institution,” and “charity” organization isn’t being a little too intentionally devious by not coming straight out with what they are doing?

North Albany Y Closed its doors in August .

The mid-term elections were also a distraction for us and for everyone else, and we felt if we published it before the elections, it would not get the attention it deserves. We confirmed all of the facts, and it’s TRUE, the Capital District YMCA has cut the Veterans discount previously offered to Veterans in HALF! What the Veteran about writes is TRUE!

According to the InfluenceWatch site, the YMCA of Greater New York has assets of $346,610,716 (as of 2016). The Capital Region YMCA reported net assets of $27,121,095 (2018). They pay no taxes but in 2018 received more than $2 million in contributions and gifts, $220,000 in fundraising, and received more than $457,000 in government grants; that a total of $2,752, 000 in contributions

GREEDY NON-PROFIT, NON-TAXPAYER YMCA

In addition, the Capital District YMCA had program revenues of $36,205,960, total contributions (gifts, donations, grants, etc.) of $2,752,800, and $616,306 in “other revenue, making a grand total revenue  of $39,575,066. They pay no taxes. (Source: Charity Navigator, last accessed on November 3, 2019).

The Capital District YMCA operates facilities in the following locations:

  • Bethlehem Area YMCA
  • Duanesburg YMCA
  • Glenville YMCA
  • Greenbush YMCA
  • Greene County YMCA
  • Guilderland YMCA
  • Schenectady YMCA
  • Southern Saratoga YMCA
  • Troy YMCA

The Capital District YMCA closed its North Albany Y in August of this year amid protests. Members were referred to the  Healthy Living Center next to the Hannaford on Central Avenue in Albany. It’s only open on weekdays and there is no pool there. Most seniors enjoy pool activities but apparently veterans and seniors are considered marginal or second-class members by the Capital District YMCA.

The Capital Region YMCA’s scandalous action taken against Veterans must not go unpunished, must not go unnoticed by a single American. It is despicable that a so-called community service organization with enormous assets and one that pays no taxes should dare to target the American Veteran!

We demand that the Capital Region YMCA rescind their marketing director’s insane decision, terminate the responsible organization officers, and admonish the board of directors. Furthermore, we urge our lawmakers and veterans organizations to come forward and chastise the Capital Region YMCA for targeting American Veterans in the Y’s attempts to enrich themselves. It’s a hair short of TREASON.

Most veterans pay their taxes. Those on disability or receiving other support have earned that support the hard way. It’s unconscionable for an organization that enjoys all of the benefits owed to Veterans, an organization that pays no taxes in support of Veterans, should slap America’s heroes in the face!

STAND UP FOR YOUR VETERANS!

Old Cut-and-Paste Joan R. is Losing it!

Local Village-Idiot Alert

Old Cut-and-Paste Joan R. of New Baltimore is at it again.
And she’s been had…AGAIN!

YES! You are, Joanie!

She’s already on a watch-list for her abuse of the Postal Service. She misused the Postal Service to send out defamatory and fake facts about a local resident to various vendors, apparently hoping to ruin his business. Her attempts failed because no one took her rubbish seriously. Besides, the vendors knew the resident well and trusted him. Why would they believe a lunatic with no name.

Well, she may have thought she had done her dirty work anonymously but she overlooked a couple of things, the most incriminating were the fingerprints on the contents and the envelopes. There were other identifiers, but we don’t want to give it all away it might spoil the fun. Thinks she’s pretty slick but she’s actually pretty stupid.

Is Old Joanie Losing It?

Most recently, she tried to slander a local resident when she handed the manager of a local YMCA a copy of one of our Smalbany blog articles, and saying that the resident, a member of the Y, had written it, apparently hoping to damage his reputation at the facility. All she managed to do was cause to facility manager a lot of grief and personal suffering. But at least the manager knows now what JR is all about. Enjoy your yoga classes, JOANIE! You too, ROBBIE! (They obviously don’t teach any yogic philosophy or ethics, just how to stretch dried up, wrinkled skin!) Again, her attempt failed and she was identified and now has some explaining to do.

The pair are known in the New Baltimore community as Cut-and-Paste Joan, because of her modus operandi of cutting and pasting her libels and slanders, and he’s the Cryptkeeper, you’d know why if you ever saw him. Seems evne Death doesn’t want them, so they just go on. Their reputations are already shit and the whole community thinks they’re the local village idiots, so she hasn’t lost much. Oh, they’re only “friend” is the former village idiot, Jane A., she’s now in the 2nd runner up position thanks to Joanie and Robbie taking the top and the second positions. Jane A. doesn’t have an icecube’s chance in hell to regain her former idiot status now that Joanie and Robbie have it.

Cryptkeeper Robbie.

But if the investigation results are used in prosecution, she may lose more than she bargained for.

18 U.S.C. § 1346 provides: For the purposes of this chapter, the term “scheme or artifice to defraud” includes a scheme or artifice to deprive another of the intangible right of honest services. Lower courts have progressively expanded this ruling, finding that the law “puts its imprimatur on the accepted moral standards and condemns conduct which fails to match the ‘reflection of moral uprightness, of fundamental honesty, fair play and right dealing in the general and business life of members of society‘”. That’s the criminal aspect.
The civil aspects include interference with contract, defamation (libel), and a laundry list of other offences.

Not only is Ms Cut-and-Paste liable to be subject to substantial civil penalties for her stupidity, Ms R. may very possibly looking at a considerable jail term — she’s pretty on in years, which proves that age is no barrier to stupidity, and she may die in jail. But then, maybe that’s karma..

An now for the positive news: You’ve probably seen a number of vehicles on streets and roadways in Northern Greene County/Southern Albany County with these bizarre bumper stickers showing “NB“. No, the “NB” doesn’t stand for New Brunswick or Newport Beach; there’s nothing that sophisticated about them. They actually stand for “NO BRAIN” and many Newbaltimorons are doing the public a service by placing those NB stickers on their vehicles, giving everyone fair notice that the operator is “NO BRAIN” from “NEW BALTIMORE.” The stickers are required by local looney law for all Town of New Baltimore employees but especially for those local residents who have earned the distinction of NB, NO BRAIN.  And watch for those bumper stickers. The lunatics are out there but at least now they’re labeled.

New Baltimore Looney-Tunes are labeling themselves.
It’s for their own protection.

Several months ago we published a letter from one of our community members, and and our own comments on the Greene County YMCA, in Coxsackie (read the article at YMCA or YMCA? There’s a BIG difference!).

We have received an update from the community member about steps taken by the Y to improve the situation there, and, at the resident’s request, we are publishing what s/he has to say:

I was recently presented with your blog article in which you quote my letter-to-the-editor regarding the Greene County YMCA and the noise nuisance there. I am since following your blog.

In all fairness and honesty, my letter addressed to you several months ago was accurate and factual. It would therefore be remiss of me if I were not to follow up with an update on the Y’s response to my complaint.
I am very, very pleased to be able to advise you that the Greene County YMCA, particularly its Operations Manager, Ms Jaqueline Whitbeck, and her executive director, Mr Carl Oropallo, have taken considerable steps to respond to my and other members’ concerns relating to the noise nuisance caused by a small minority of an otherwise great community.
Ms Whitbeck went to great lengths to have the offending equipment moved, and to considerable expense to purchase special pads to dampen most of the noise caused by the heavy lifters and their weights.
I am very happy to be able to report on these positive developments, which go largely to the credit of Ms Whitbeck, and to the support she received from her executive director, Mr Oropallo.
Thank you for publishing my first letter and thank you in advance for publishing this update.
Please do not publish my name.
P.s. I read your recent post on that evil creature who tried to defame another member using your blog article. I can say that I think you are right on target with your article. My question is why Ms. JR would continue her stupidity? What was her intent and whom did she want to hurt by bringing the blog article to Ms Whitbeck’s attention. All she accomplished was to cause Ms Whitbeck a great deal of pain, and to demonstrate what a scoundrel Ms JR is. Thank you for exposing her.
P.p.s. Do you think Joan will be delivering this one to the Y, too? Not very likely; she won’t be able to milk any dirt from it.
We are very pleased that we were able in our small way to help to reconcile the problems at the Greene County Y. Of course, we will visit the Greene County Y to verify that management is being proactive in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of their members.
We are also very pleased to know that the community is recognizing the scoundrels among us, and that they are properly being identified and marked with their nastiness. While we do realize that our reader is being cautious in not mentioning the name of the scoundrel, we are grateful for the confirmation.
The Editor.

YMCA or YMCA? There’s a BIG difference!

YMCA originally stood for “Young Mens’ Christian Association” and still does in many areas; in Coxsackie, at the Greene County Y, it’s been redefined to contain the words “Yahoos  & Messy Angry Locals.”

Make no mistake about it, the traditional YMCA leaves the big box, franchise gyms like Planet Fitness and Best Fitness in the dust. The YMCA or the “Y” as it’s come to be known, has always been a venue for all ages and is a real community. Most Y-s have complete fitness facilities, the larger ones like the Bethlehem Y (https://cdymca.org/locations/bethlehem-ymca) have pools, steam room, sauna, hot tub, ice rink, fully equipped weights and cardio areas, and a list of programs both for fee and free. Nothing actually compares in terms of value for your money, and there are various discounts for seniors, low-income, and even for recommending new members.

Greene County Y Building

Unlike the franchise fitness scams, you will not only find that the facilities are better and offer a wider range of activities and programs, but the staff is professional at the Y, and the members are a community. Besides, if you are a member of one Y you will be able to use the facilities of most other Y’s without paying an extra fee. Pulls the plug on Planet Fitness’ premium priced “Black Card.”

Are some Y-s aiming for similar approval ratings?

Regardless of Planet Fitness’ business model, it is by all standards a ripoff, and their bottom line does not include you. Their whole business model revolves around getting your to sign a contract, then accessing your bank accounts, while hoping you’ll never show up for a workout. Their employees are ignorant and their employee retention is abysmal at best. As for management: What management?  Overall, PF is an accident looking for a place to happen; don’t let it be you.

We’d expect a family and community oriented organization like the YMCA to be much different. Like any organization, the Y has its own culture, too. And each local Y has its culture as well. Just as some are larger than others, some are better managed than others.

Here’s what one reader has to say:

Again, I have to mention the Bethlehem Y as being top-shelf in most all categories. But there are quite a few Y-s in the Capital District area, and I have not been able to visit them all, so some might even out score Bethlehem, though it’s unlikely. Bethlehem is clean, spacious, well organized, well equipped, professional, courteous, and a great place overall. So I’ll use the Bethlehem Y as the local standard to be striven for.

There’s always a contrast. You find a fantastic location and then you find a bottom-feeder. Same with the Capital District Y-s.

The local-yokel facility I’m reviewing today is the Green County YMCA in the backwater, hill-town Coxsackie, in Greene County. You know it’s backwater when there’s only one Y for the entire county!

But first I do want to mention that the front desk staff are lovely people. Always a warm greeting and a smile. My darts go to the Coxsackie Y management and the so-called “directors.”

The membership will generally reflect the region and that’s also true for the Coxsackie Y. Most of the members are geezers who take up a lot of space sharing stories and talking about their aches, pains, and hernias. They’re generally fun and great to talk to but then they also tend to be speed bumps for the rest of us. God love them, though! They’re the salt of the Earth.

In fact, most of the members, young and not so young, are generally sociable and some are downright exceptional. They make up the bulk of the membership and are courteous, friendly, considerate, and mind their manners. It’s those members that take the edge off the failings I’m talking about below.

Then there are some members who are inconsiderate and seem to have no respect or courtesy for the facility or for other members. They’re usually the 30-40 age group with an anger problem. They throw or drop weights or just manage to be unpleasantly loud when working out. Some, doing dead lifts, cause a deafening clang with each rep that disturbs members on the cardio equipment and generally throughout the Gym. There are contractual rules for using the facility and unwritten rules of sociability but these yahoos think the sun rises and sets on them and makes the atmosphere toxic.

I have complained to management on at least three different occasions about the deafening clangs from the deadlifters in that tiny space, but was told that they have to get mats. (That was a year ago. Nothing’s been done yet.) On one occasion, the director, a woman, told me that the noise was OK because they “were doing the exercise right.” By the way, the “mats” to absorb the shock of the falling weights have been coming for almost a year now. She seems really concerned about the problem. NOT!

Dropping these weights causes a loud CLANG that can damage hearing! Besides, they’re lifting too much weight in the first place!

When you wear the title and get the salary of a “director” or “manager,” you direct or manage. At the Coxsackie Y, the majority female staff does neither. At any given time they’re parked at their desks in their offices staring into their computers, oblivious to what is going on the workout floor. This applies both to the so-called director of the Coxsackie Y, a woman, and to the so-called “wellness director,” a woman. These two “directors” seem to be better at laughing loudly, chatting with each other, flirting with the geezers, than managing a health and fitness facility.

My personal opinion is their eyes shouldn’t be glued to their computer screens but should be on the workout floor and what’s going on out there. Trainers, if any, should be out there keeping things in line, too. Both are invisible most of the time.

There is a video on YouTube showing the Coxsackie Y but you’d be a real fool to believe that it’s so roomy and clean. It’s not. In fact, on any day you can walk into the men’s locker room and wonder (1) was it ever cleaned that week, or (2) have they let the pigs out today? The men’s locker room is badly ventilated so that when some of the members have their toxic dump, you can’t be in the locker room (the crapper is right there in the smallish locker room).

Members also seem to have a problem with closing locker doors. Typical of the area, they must all live in barns or sheds.

The weights area is a mess. Members leave weights on the machines or just don’t put things back after they use them. As I mentioned above, it’s also dangerous because the place is so congested, some members drop or throw weights, and the staff does nothing to correct the poor gym etiquette, even when one complains to them.

The bad manners of some of the members, the overall congestion and clutter in the facility, and the indifference and lack of interest of the director and other upper-level staff make the place an accident risk at any given time. You have to wonder who is insuring them.

There are “trainers” and I have seen only one female trainer picking up after the slobs or wiping down mats, which frequently are dirty or gritty. Again, you can’t make shit shine. When members are pigs and walk all over everything, and don’t give a damn about others, you get a Greene County Y situation.

The other day I observed clumps of dried mud in the area of the cardio machines; apparently some member decided to wear his work boots on the workout floor rather than change into sneakers. That, again, is an example of poor facility management. In fact, I had to tell management that one yahoo was going to have an accident because he was working out without any shoes on. Why would anyone have to tell the attendants or the managers about something that was in plain view…that is, if they could take their eyes off their computer screens or each other for a minute.

On their website (https://cdymca.org/locations/greene-county-ymca/) the Greene Y website lists a number of “personal trainers” but I’ve only ever seen two of them and I’ve been there at different times. Most of the time there isn’t one there. Besides, of the two I’ve seen, the male (Wayne, according to the website) didn’t make much of an impression but the woman (Sue, according to the website) is very interested in what’s going on and is the only one I’ve ever seen, including the so-called wellness director, picking up after members, wiping mats down, and generally taking an interests in the place.

In general, the comparison of these two local YMCA facilities is like a comparison of night and day. That doesn’t mean that a smaller facility can’t be well managed and kept clean and safe. What it does mean is that either management is either incompetent or indifferent at the Greene County Y. When you’re a manager you can’t be everyone’s buddy; you have to manage. That’s the manager’s duty and responsibility both to his or her organization and to the members he/she is there to serve.

[Name withheld at reader’s request]

We agree with many of the reader’s comments in general, since we are also members of the Y (the Bethlehem Y) but frequently use the Greene County Y when in that area. The culture is definitely different and management is characteristic of the area, that is, provincial and unsophisticated, which likely results in the deficiencies noted by the reader.

It’s a no-brainer that the free-weights area is a dangerous place even when members have some discipline. But when members are not disciplined, have no respect for others, and are not monitored or corrected by the paid staff, that’s a double danger. As for the noise in the workout area, the Hearing Health Foundation has made a statement about gym noise and hearing loss. There’s plenty on the Internet on the subject of gym noise and hearing loss; just google the terms “gym noise hearing loss.”

We work out at the Greene County Y from time to time and can vouch for what our reader has to say. We’d go further to mention that most gyms and fitness facilities provide background music. The Greene County Y does too but it’s poor quality and incredibly repetitive. But that’s no excuse for the smartphones on the gym floor. Too many members are tuning or talking while trying to walk at the same time. Many upscale gyms won’t allow the devices in the workout area because they know they cause accidents because the users are too stupid to stop and do what they have to do, and then continue walking. Most of them can’t chew gum and walk at the same time. it’s dangerous. And you have  more than your share of these dumbasses roaming around the congested area of the Greene County Y. Management apparently is blind to the problem.

At any given time you know that most of the neanderthals are lifting much more than they should be lifting. That’s why they have to drop the weights or throw them, or make so much noise with them. The weights are just too heavy for them. So drop some of it you fat jerks!

Far be it for the absent trainers or the dimwitted management to ensure the safety of the Neanderthals and the other members by giving some lifting advice. Gee, that would mean doing their jobs. Perish the thought.

There are numerous, perhaps thousands of articles and studies on the problems of cell phones in the workout area. The New York Times has also chimed in on the subject with a very interesting article on the subject (New York Times Article). You don’t have to believe us when we tell you that the moron with the phone in the gym needs to be told to leave it in the locker, or leave. Just google the subject.

Stupid twit! We’re not interested in your gash gossip!

We blame the directors of the Greene County Y and the Capital District YMCA, is the parent organization responsible for oversight of the Greene County Y. It’s their job to ensure that management works, that the facilities are clean and safe, and that the rules are posted and enforced.

Addendum: Healthcare and compensation scammers find a home at the Y. On yet another note we have to note that we wonder what the scam is with all of these guys on leave because of “injuries” and waiting for the compensation board or the state insurance corporation to decide on their “disability.” One at the Greene County Y was recently chatting with another goon, apparently from the NYS Department of Corrections or some law enforcement agency, about how his neurologist was taking his time with the determination and the other was still on paid leave and couldn’t go back to work. What in hell are they doing in the gym lifting weights if they’re so incapacitated. And I don’t mean low weights as in rehab, I mean WEIGHTS. They have a scam going and it’s not right or fair to the rest of us, especially if we’re footing the bill for their fake conditions. There are more examples and everyone there knows about them. They banter about it right out in the open!!! So let’s fix it, why don’t we? Where are the NYS authorities when all of this fraud is going on?
