It Shouldn’t Be a One-Man Show…Where are the Rest of You?

One single resident of Ravena steps out and creates a place for the kids

A One-Man-Show Won't Work

A One-Man-Show Won’t Work

To Get the Best Out of It We Have to Team Up

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.

Coming together is a beginning.
Keeping together is progress.
Working together is success.

In the meantime one single Ravena resident takes his savings and his time, gets a second job to do something for the kids. Something the kids really need: a place to go other than the street! And they get rides home after the club closes…in his care, not in a Coeymans police vehicle. While the village of Ravena is shelling out hundreds of thousands of dollars for a handful of special friends, and the town of Coeymans is busy looking the other way while leaving youth services to the Coeymans Police Department, one single resident of Ravena steps out and creates a place for the kids: the Ravena-Coeymans Youth and Teen Activities Center (RCYTAC).

Parents and residents of Ravena-Coeymans: When’s the last time you visited the RCYTAC? I visited just the other day and I was floored to see how nice it is. I was floored to see a lot of teens who I know personally enjoying the place. Those kids actually stopped, greeted me and were happy to see me there. They actually looked, well, happy! The disk jockey’s a teen, the food service staff are teens, the teens learning how to take charge and socialize. As I was visiting, kids were strolling in but none were coming out so I assumed that they were involved in one of the many available activities…all of them monitored and supervised, mind you!

While I was standing outside with Mr Michael Fisher, creater of the RCYTAC, I was amazed when a parent came up and asked if she could donate the refreshments from her son’s grad party, because he decided that he didn’t want a party and that the RCYTAC should have it. The parent also made a fairly generous cash contribution for the kids. That same parent, a psychologist and author of children’s books, is planning to do poetry and literature workshops at the RCYTAC! Question: What are YOU doing?

I have one single question, parents, residents: Where the hell are the rest of you????

Why is it you’d risk leaving your kids unsupervised, in their rooms, on Facebook, being evil? Why wouldn’t you give them a ride to the RCYTAC where they can socialize in a healthy environment?

Why is it you’d risk your teen’s wandering around dark streets and parks at risk of life and limb? Why wouldn’t you give them a ride to the RCYTAC where they can socialize safely?

Why is it you don’t enjoy some personal time to recuperate without the unnecessary stress of either knowing where your kids are or, worse still, not knowing?!? Why wouldn’t you give them a ride to the RCYTAC where they can socialize in a healthy environment?

Why is it you’d risk having the Coeymans Police, the Albany County Sheriff, or the State Police bringing your kid home or bringing your the news of his or her arrest, bail, court appearances—or worse, news of a tragedy— when you could have supported the RCYTAC with some time and a couple of bucks donation?

Tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of your tax dollars are being spent on worthless projects like a village fitness center

Why is it you sit back oblivious to the fact that tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of your tax dollars are being spent on worthless projects like a village fitness center that is exclusive and unwelcoming to many in the community, while youth programs and services are ignored? Why aren’t you demanding that some of that money be donated no strings attached to the RCYTAC?!? No strings attached! We don’t want it to become a Coeymanazi brainwashing camp, do we? Why aren’t you parents and residents appearing at village and town board meetings screaming bloody murder that nothing is being done for youth…well almost nothing, the Coeymans police seem to like arresting them. Don’t you realize that if the kids are off the streets and not looking for something to do, they’ll likely stay out of mischief?prison kid

Ravena Coeymans Selkirk teens and youth are tomorrow’s consumers and voters; If you mobilze NOW and get your parents to support your projects, you can move on local government and get those geezers to support your RCYTAC. BE YOUR OWN RCS CHAMPIONS!!!

Teen Work is Team Work

Teen Work is Team Work

success

Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk teens: Why would you stick with street friends who will only get you into a mess of trouble? Why don’t you get smart and mobilize for your own good? Michael Fisher is handing you the opportunity to do something really good, important, responsible, independent for you and your generation at the Teen Center. Mr Fischer is handing you the opportunity to show that you can become a part of something great, you can be your own leaders, you can create a community you can be proud of, and you can empower yourselves and your friends to get the attention of local residents and government to take an interest in your welfare, in your RCYTAC, to support Mr Michael Fisher’s vision for RC youth. Ravena Coeymans Selkirk teens and youth are tomorrow’s consumers and voters; If you mobilze NOW and get your parents to support your projects, you can move on local government and get those geezers to support your RCYTAC. Be fair! Don’t make Mr Fisher do it all on his dime…he just can’t do it without your help and support.

Really Bad Move!

Really Bad Move!

As scary as the girls’ Facebook exchanges were, some good points were made such as: Being bad is not cool because it will come back to bite you in future, when you’ll really need to prove who and what you are. Beating someone up is not cool, it’s criminal, and it’s not going to get you a job or an education; it’s going to get you a reputation and a bad one at that and one that’s likely to follow you wherever you go. But if you are a leader now and to take the initiative to work for community, that’s going to serve you well for the rest of your lives. Be smart…be leadership…be champions!

Why is it you are sitting there thinking that your kids are getting the most out of the school district budget? Are you in denial or just plain stupid? Have you examined the school budget to see just how much of it is “for the kids”? You might want to do that one day. And don’t be misled by the dumbing down of the curriculum or the fancy-sounding names they give to programs that are there just to enrich the staff with extra pay. Ask yourself why an athletics coach or a teacher is being paid 4-6 times the per capita income of RC residents or 2-3x the average household income of a RC household? Then ask yourself why you haven’t made a substantial donation to the RCYTAC for the valuable service of keeping your kids safe (the school system doesn’t seem to be able to do that), saving you bail money, and even possibly saving you funeral expenses. Blunt, but real.

Empowered Youth

Empowered Youth

We support what is good for this community and most especially what is good for our greatest hope and asset: our teens and youth. We adults who have the good sense and vision realize that some day we are going to have to depend on today’s youth when they are making the decisions and running things. And the kind of people I want to see running things for me when I need them are the kind of teens and youth I saw at the Ravena-Coeymans Youth and Teen Activity Center.

Expanding Horizons: The RCS Community Library

rcs community library discover yourself

Our second stop on our whirlwind tour of new operations in RCS was the RCS Community Library on Main Street in Ravena.

We’ve published accounts of the rough road this important community institution was forced to navigate at the hands of Mayor John T. Bruno and his band of merry thugs in village Hall. We’ve also published accounts of the corruption that has become the Ravena Health and Fitness Center and the scandal that is going on there in what was once the RCS Community Library’s home. We also reported on the Ravena-Coeymans incest club’s contribution to the Library’s difficulties with slow progress of renovation work and rent increases while they were in their old location. Thank you! Mayor John Bruno!

But this is a report on the positive, on how the dedicated officers on the board of trustees, the directors, the women and men who are there with a smile to help, and a beautiful, spacious, airy, welcoming new location.

Even the courts agree that “A library is “‘a place dedicated to quiet, to knowledge, and to beauty.” (e.g. Brown v. Louisiana, 383 U.S. 131, 142, 86 S.Ct. 719, 724, 15 L.Ed.2d 637 (1966)) . Its very purpose is to aid in the acquisition of knowledge through reading, writing and quiet contemplation. Our libraries are centers of First Amendment protected rights, they are places where the word, dialogue, speech and expression are available for all.

I, personally was not able to attend the grand opening and, in a way I’m glad I didn’t. I would not have been able to devote my attention to the details of the place, physical and personal. When I walked in I was pleasantly surprised at the pleasant atmosphere: it’s open, airly, bright, clean. You’re not stifled or intimidated (That’s a nice change in Ravena, right?).

I was able to meander through stacks that were full but I didn’t get the impression that an avalanche of books was going to bury my any second. I noted a couple of dedicated spaces, including what appeared to be a children’s center. Everything had a place.

There was a bank of computers ready to assist anyone to get to this blog (LOL), or anywhere else on the Internet, providing it’s decent.

But the most pleasant experience came when I had questions about what the RCS Community Library could to for me and my reading requirements. It was not a disappointment. Several library staff came to my assistance and, if one couldn’t answer my questions or didn’t have the experience with the service I needed, they knew right where to go.

The very convincing message they delivered was: We’re here to help make your reading and research experience as pleasant as we can. And they did. They offered suggestions, alternatives, information I didn’t have; all to ensure that my needs were met.

I Left The RCS Community Library Very Impressed and With My New Library Card

Leaving the library, I was a happy camper and glad that I supported their fine efforts with a YES to their budget. A group like that can’t fail because they have their hearts in the right place and their fingers on the pulse of this community.

We’d like to see some joint programs organized collaboratively by the RC Youth Activities and Teen Center and the RCS Community Library. Joining forces and optimizing resources and opportunities can only multiply effectiveness!

We Encourage Everyone to Visit the RCS Community Library, to Meet and Chat with the Staff There, and to Make Use of the Beautiful New Facilities. Make it A Point to Use Your Library! I Know I Will!

Get the Resident’s Impressions of the Facilities, the Staff, and the General Welcoming Spirit at Each. You May Be Surprised (Maybe NOT!). But It’ll Be Worth the Read. But first….

rcteenactivitycenter

rc teen centerWe’d like first of all to turn our attention to the RCS Teen Center, a project started about 6 months ago by local Ravena resident Michael Fisher.

Back in about January, when we first heard about the opening of a teen center in Ravena, our first reaction was pure scepticism, and rightly so. What with the goings on in Ravena-Coeymans and its history what else could we possibly think but yet another Coeymanazi scheme to fleece the community, benefit the friends and relatives of those in town and village hall, and yet another failure.

Well, dear readers, we are pleased to admit we were terribly wrong!

We stated our skepticism and the reasons why we urged caution. We also corresponded with the founder, Mr Michael Fisher, whom we found to be genuine and sincere. We shut up and gave him a chance to survive and to succeed without our harranguing and interfering. We felt that if he failed we would be right but if he succeeded we would be there to thank him. He has succeeded so far!

Well, dear readers, we are pleased to admit we were terribly wrong! And we’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr Fisher for his guts, perserverence, and incredible sacrifice and generosity in making this important and valuable gift to our teens.

This turnaround is not simply based on surface observations but on reliable sources, teens and their parents. Not the parents who are dumping their teens on the Teen Center to have personal time for themselves but parents who really parent. It’s from those reliable and credible sources that we’ve heard such good things about the RCS Teen Center and Mr Fisher’s fine work.

We’d like to Commend Mr Michael Fisher, his Team of Volunteers, and the RCS Teen Center

And it’s not all fun and games, entertainment and dancing. It’s about guidance and good discipline because Mr Fisher encourages responsible behavior and is not one to deal lightly with misconduct. According to reliable reports he not only imposes discipline such as banning from the Center because of misconduct at the center but does not tolerate misconduct outside of the center, either. One anecdote shared with us is how a teen acted out and did some damage. The parent stepped up and paid for the damage. Mr Fisher banned the teen for a time but when the teen misbehaved vis-a-vis the  parent, Fisher tacked another couple of weeks onto the penalty. Way to go, Mike!

So, we’d like to commend Mr Michael Fisher, his team of volunteers, and the RCS Teen Center for a terrific job and send a special Thank you! to a man and community-spirited citizen who has invested heavily from his personal savings to make an important gift to our teens and to our Community!

Our Third, and Quite Possibly Our Most Disappointing Stop Was…

The Ravena Health and Fitness Center

Given the history and the circumstances surrounding the questionable creation and scandalous lack of planning and corrupt funding of the Ravena Health and Fitness Center, and given the way the village of Ravena simply went through the motions but then hired one of their own to be “director” of the center for a cool $30 grand a year, we found it very difficult to dump emotions and stay objective when stepping into the place.

But that notwithstanding, here’s our report on our experience plus the added entertainment report of a local resident’s experience at the Ravena Health and Fitness Center.

First of all, we were pleasantly surprised to find the place really looking like a fitness center. At first glance it’s a bit cramped and, if you get 10 or 15 people in the place it could make the impression of being crowded and claustrophobic, but if you were to go there with the genuine intention of getting a good workout, you’d probably not notice.

We also had the feeling that two things can happen if the place gets off to a start: It will become a haven for young men who want to strut their testosterone-soaked egos (and this would discourage the older crowd) or it will become a watering hole for bored housewives and local buffalos (which would likely discourage the younger folk). Either way, the place will not likely support both groups because it’s simply too cramped.

I found that the open area where the classes would be held to be too open and would distract from the necessary concentration for strength and weight training

The center has a program of “classes” but I found that the open area where the classes would be held to be too open and would distract from the necessary concentration for strength and weight training enthusiasts or persons doing cardio or aerobic exercise on the machines, and who generally like to while away the time reading or enjoying music. In other words, it may turn out to be very distracting whatever you’re likely to be involved in.

I was greeted by a very pleasant young man who tended to ramble on with a scriptlike pitch until I had to tell him I have been working out for many years and know my way around a gym and have my routines, so “Can it!” (but not in so many words).

In general, the staff was pleasant and, although a bit puppy-like, eager to assist.

Locker rooms—there’s only one and there’s absolutely no privacy. No showers.

I was a bit disappointed when I asked about the locker rooms—there’s only one and there’s absolutely no privacy. No showers, either. I was told that changing booths were going to be installed but there would be no showers. So much for privacy and hygiene.

The Ravena Health and Fitness center, for what it offers, is extremely expensive

The greeter/salesperson handed me a copy of the “membership contract” which was a surprise, too. The Ravena Health and Fitness center, for what it offers, is extremely expensive: 1 year membership for village residents is $240.00/year or $150/6 months ($300/year). For non-village residents (I’m not quite certain what a “non-village resident” is supposed to be) a whopping $300/year or $180/6 months ($360/year). The per visit fee is $10.

We compared the cost of membership and membership options with two local clubs, Bally’s and Planet—RHFC was dead in the water!

What I don’t get is that the Ravena health and fitness center is subsidized by our tax dollars and is supposed to be a community club so why the devil is it so damned expensive???? Maybe Mayor John T. Bruno or fitness center director Cathy Deluca (hired at $30K a year + benes) can answer that for us.

Dictatorial and Heavy-handed Membership Registration & Conditions

In addition to the extremely expensive membership fees, another problem I see is the fact that for that money you have only one club to choose from: Ravena.

So we compared the cost of membership and membership options with two local clubs, Planet Fitness and Ballys, both with locations nationwide, and both fitness systems offering incredible opportunities for whatever your tastes may be. In general, the average cost for full membership, the opportunity to use any club anywhere they have a club, the availability of the most modern equipment, trainers, exercise programs, in some locations swimming pools, sauna, steam, separate changing rooms for men and women, showers, and frequently they’re open 24 hours to accommodate almost any member’s schedule is—I hope you’re sitting down—an average of between $150-175/year, and depending on the membership plan you choose, could be as low as $75/year. There are  innumerable options so we’re just providing the average.

The burning question is: Ravena Taxpayers, Ravena Residents, are already paying at least $115,000 for the Ravena Health and Fitness Center for the budget year 2013-14, so Why??? do Ravena Residents have to shell out at least $240.00 each a year to use the Ravena Health and Fitness Center???? Taxpayer money supports the RCS Community Library but residents and even non-residents can use the library FREE! There’s no additional charge to use the Community Library! So why do Ravena residents have to get hit twice by the Bruno-Warner-Deluca crooks?

Bally’s has one club in the Albany area (Crossgates Mall) but Planet Fitness has about 5 locations in our immediate area, the closest one being in Glenmont.

So, as far as facilities and cost go, the Ravena Health and Fitness Center falls far short of being worth the money for what it offers.

The terms of membership are a bit dictatorial and heavy-handed, something I have not experienced at other clubs (I’m a long-time member of Bally’s and a member at Planet Fitness). At Ravena Health and Fitness, for example, in terms of liability for personal injury or property loss, you have to sign your life away (hopefully not literally). The Ravena Health and Fitness Center assumes no responsibility for any liability. So read the Membership Registration Form very carefully before signing, if you actually are considering joining the joint. The impression I got, though didn’t ask for confirmation, was that they are not insured. (I’d be very happy if someone were to correct me if I’m wrong on this.)

Ravena Health and Fitness can change “facilities, equipment,  hours, service, regulations and policies” at any time and by singing the Membership Agreement you agree to accept this as a condition of membership. No way, José! For $240-$300/year? Forgettaboutit!

There are other very bizarre and restrictive terms and conditions of membership that I found to be overly controlling and unnecessary for a tiny, community-based club.

Our advice: Read the Membership Registration agreement very carefully before putting your money down and signing! Think very carefully about whether it’s worth the money and the possible aggravation.

We’ll close this report with the impressions of a local resident who very recently visited the Ravena Health and Fitness center and shared his/her impressions with us but asked to remain unidentified for obvious reasons. Here’s what he/she had to say:

“I stopped in at the Ravena health club to check it out and see what was going on.

“I walked in and one of the employees approached me and introduced himself. I told him why I was there and he agreed to give me a tour. What was really bizarre was that there was a heavy-set, older blond woman sitting on a desk in the office area who gave me a wierd feeling of being watched or examined but the tour got my mind off her gaze for a while.

“I liked the equipment because there were several machines I like to use, free weights, too. There was warm-up equipment and a space for stretching. The problem was that it was kind of cramped and not very inviting…it didn’t have that ‘gym feel’, if you know what I mean. At least before it felt like a library, it still does.

“There’s only one co-ed locker room! No showers!

“I would have considered it a possibility for when I’m too lazy to make the trip to Albany to the club where I normally work out but the Ravena club is really crazy expensive. It would cost me more than $200 for much less than what I get for $75 a year at my Albany club. No brainer!

“But the real clincher came when I met a woman who was exercising who recognized me and asked me, “Are you [redacted]?” When I answered, “Yes!” I heard the chubby blond behind the counter let out what I can only describe as a squeal and then heard a lot of whispering. I continued my chat with the woman who was from my RCS graduating class, and who wanted to get my address for an upcoming class reunion.

“When I was ready to leave, the chubby, older  blond  [woman] called me over, asked my name and started to verbally assault me. I asked who she was and she identified herself as “Cathy Deluca.” I responded, “My pleasure! I was looking forward to meeting you, Mrs Deluca!” Her response was, “It’s not a pleasure!” She continued her assault and finally told me, “You’re not welcome. Please leave.”

“I guess that solves the question of joining the Ravena club.

“You were right. It’s run by that group and when an employee of a publicly owned, community facility can make a decision whether a resident is “welcome” or not it’s pretty bad. I’m paying her salary and she has no right to tell me I’m unwelcome for no reason at all, or just because she doesn’t like my politics.

“Business as usual in Ravena!”

We couldn’t have said it better and we won’t attempt to do so. But we did recommend that the resident file a Notice of Claim against the village of Ravena for Cathy Deluca’s misconduct. Who knows, the resident may end up owning a fitness center!

CONGRATULATIONS! MR JOHN M. VADNEY!!!

Albany District Attorney P. David Soares Got Another Faceful of Rotten Egg Today When a Town of Bethlehem Judge Dismissed All Charges Against Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District Board of Ed President

Mr John M. Vadney

 animated_4th-of-July-fireworks

All Charges were Dismissed for Lack of Evidence as there was “No Truth to the Charges.” Not Only Does Mr John Vadney Deserve this Commuity’s Hearfelt Congratulations for Having Stood His Ground Like a True Hero and Holding Out Against the Forces of Evil in His Community, He Should Demand a Public Apology for the Harassment He Received at the Hands of  Arch-Corrupt Albany County District Attorney P.[udenda] David Soares, the Albany Times Union a.k.a. Albany Times Useless, the Local Rags (the Official Newspaper of the Coeymanazis, the Ravena News Herald) and News Channels 6, 10, and 13!

rat-poisonFurthermore, Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares Should Be Drummed of Public Office and Barred from Practicing Law in New York State or Anywhere Else for the Outrageous Travesty of Justice and the Shameful Waste of Public Money in His Relentless and Malicious Attempt at Prosecuting an Innocent Man. If Soares and his lackeys had a set of rat’s balls among them they would have been honest and ethical in view of the total lack of facts and the circumstances and refused to get involved. But NO! Faithful to their Albany Democrat Politics they had to join in the Coeymanazi retaliation. In other words, Albany DA obviously was involved in the Coeymanazi conspiracy!

soares-head-small

SHHH!
Soares Sucks

fat bastard traceyThe case has been dragging on and on since May 2012, when Mr Joseph “Joe” Tracey, father of sociopath Josephine ‘Tracey-O’Connor, famed former RCS board of education clown and wannabe teacher, filed trumped up charges against Mr Vadney, alleging Mr Vadney called him names. The more than 200 pound lump of wuss-flesh was allegedly part of a conspiracy to embarass Mr Vadney and a feeble-minded attempt to force him to resign from his position as board president. The idiotic circus program was hatched by the Coeymanazis nesting in the Coeymans Police Department and in the RCS high-school where New York State United Teachers local rep, Matthew “Matt-the-Mutt” Miller, is the inside man for the teachers clique on the RCS board of education.

The so-called teachers clique made up of Alice Whalen, Howard “Bray” Engel, James “Jimmy” Latter, and Edward “Teddy” Reville, at the time of the fraudulent charges also included whacko-woman Josephine O’Connor and Tracey Traver, both of the teachers clique. The clique was actively supported by the likes of Gerald “Dirty-Hands Jerry” Deluca and his bottle-blond partner, Cathy Deluca, and a ragtag bunch of psycho victims who were capable of just about anything, judging by the likes of Joe Tracey and his daughter Josephine Tracey-O’Connor.

It seems that after the 2012 budget vote was passed under suspicious circumstances under the guidance of Gerald “Dirty-Hands Jerry” Deluca and his mob of Coeymanazis, and with the backing of the NYSUT nuggie Matt-the-Mutt Miller, the Coeymanazis and the teachers union’s  only way to deliver on their empty promises was to control the board of education.

Congratulations Mr Vadney & Supporters!

Congratulations Mr Vadney & Supporters!

But Mr Vadney’s group was voted in and took the majority, grabbing the prize and the board out of the teachers and Coeymanazi’s greedy kleptomaniac hands. Mr Vadney was confirmed as president of the board and Mr Michael Robbins was elected to be vice-president.

Readers will recall that we covered the events extensively on this blog and you can search the blog to read all of the real facts.

Readers will also recall how the teachers clique and the Coeymanazis made every attempt to oust Mr Rodney Krzykowski and to defame Mr Jeff Lukens. Neither conspiracy worked.

Judge Judy:WTF!?!

Judge Judy:
WTF!?!
She can’t believe what goes on in RCS!

Mr Joe Tracey was allegedly put up to first harass and to threaten the board president’s family when Tracey, gutless coward that he is, appeared at the offices of the family business and verbally abused Mr Vadney’s sister. Of course, there were witnesses, but when Ms Vadney attempted to file a complaint with the Coeymans Police, Kerry Thompson refused to take the complaint. A female police officer who asked not to be identified later informed Ms Vadney that what Thompson had done was wrong and that she, the officer, would make sure it got into the file. (You’ll also recall how we broke the story about Coeymans police chief Gregory Darlington’s hiring of Thompson to be his personal assistant at mre than $31/h!) Coeymanazis take care of their own!

So there is evidence that the Coeymans Police Department was involved in the conspiracy not only with Thompson’s refusal to take the complaint against Tracey but also the fact that Gerald “Dirty-Hands-Jerry” Deluca is a close friend of Josephine Tracey-O’Connor, the one who claimed that Mr Vadney called her “fat” (well, actually, she’s not what you would really call petite).  Witnesses to the entire scene testify that no such thing ever happened. It was a bare face lie.

So, dear readers, Truth and Justice won in the end, and that doesn’t happen often in this RCS community or in Albany County so we are all witnesses to a truly historic moment.

The case against Mr Vadney is DISMISSED and Joe Tracey gets 6 MONTHS PROBATION!

The Court has done the right thing in terms of Justice; now let’s see if the local media has the guts to do the right thing and publish the truth!

Just A Friendly Reminder

Always Keep in Mind that this Blog is Intended to Bring About
Positive Change

positve change

While it may sometimes seem that examples and language style used in our articles is insensitive, sometimes harsh, it is not the words that count but the meaning behind them. Language is used for communication. Style is used to grab attention. True facts are important for establishing credibility. And readers are essential for mobilization, realization, and implementation of the change.

If I’ve learned anything from my professional experience it’s that most people really and sincerly want the best for themselves, their loved ones, and for their community. Very few, and we know pretty much who they are, are self-serving, insensitive, and indifferent to the common good. We’ve identified many of those maladjusted souls on this blog and we intend to continue that work.

What Kind of Listener are You?

What Kind of Listener are You?

But this article is for the rest of our readers, the innocent who are constantly getting disappointed. Please keep in mind that no one likes to be told they’re wrong in so many blunt words. No one likes to be told that they’re making stupid choices. No one likes to be told that they are investing their emotional capital in losing enterprises. In other words, no one likes to get their noses rubbed in their own crappola.

But we also have to avoid becoming grateful to or sympathetic of our oppressors. Believe it or not, there is such a thing as the Stockholm syndrome, or capture–bonding. It’s a psychological phenomenon in which the oppressed [hostages, victims] express empathy and sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors or oppressors, sometimes to the point of defending them. These feelings are generally considered irrational in light of the danger or risk experienced by the oppressed person, the victim or the hostage, who essentially misinterpret a lack of abuse from their oppressors for an act of kindness. The FBI’s Hostage Barricade Database System shows that roughly 27% of victims show evidence of this so-called Stockholm syndrome.

Stop Being Hostages!!!

Stop Being Hostages!!!

Stockholm syndrome can be seen as a form of traumatic bonding, which does not necessarily require a hostage scenario, but which describes “strong emotional ties that develop between two persons where one person intermittently harasses, beats, threatens, abuses, or intimidates the other.” One commonly used hypothesis to explain the effect of Stockholm syndrome is based on Freudian theory. It suggests that the bonding is the individual’s response to trauma in becoming a victim. Identifying with the aggressor is one way that the ego defends itself. When a victim thinks he or she believes or shares the same values as the oppressor/aggressor, they no longer become a threat; they’re no longer a hostage, no longer a victim. They become one of their oppressors! Or so they rationalize.

We can see in our own community, in the RCS and in the New Baltimore community how his has happened. Just think about it for a minute.

art of deep listeningWe will bring most people to our side if we gently nudge them rather than pushing them. They’ll listen more readily and willingly if we hear what they say and engage them in alternative dialogue, by mirroring what they say with what we hear them saying, inviting that all-important dialogue to take place. We’ll earn their trust and confidence if we first acknowledge that we all have a common objective: the good of the community. We just think we know how to achieve it but many times we may be heading down the wrong street.

What I’d like to see our crusaders do is go gently. Be a good listener. Be well informed and offer alternatives not outright criticism or opposition. Good listening to is what many of our neighbors need; not criticism or opposition. Once our neighbors realize someone is listening to what they have to say, they’ll be ready to listen, too. This blog is living proof of that statement: we hear what people have to say, listen to what they mean, and read their communications empathetically. Then we respond.

In ethics we have big words to describe the personal dignity that each person has and their sense of being an individual, their own right to personhood. We teach that people should not do for people what they can do for themselves–this is called the principle of subsidiarity. We also teach the principle of doing no harm and that no evil (= bad) act should be the means to even a good result. Keeping those few ethical principles in mind can take us a long way to positive outcomes in this community.

In the Divine ImageIntellect, Free Will, Responsibility

In the Divine Image
Intellect, Free Will, Responsibility

While I don’t want to get too intellectual at this point, I would like to share with our readers something that St Thomas Aquinas had to say about “rational” creatures: First, the rational creature naturally moves toward the ultimate Good. St Thomas goes on to say that “Man is made in the image of God in so far as men and women are patterned after God through intellectualityfreedom of will, and self-determination.”  Humankind, you and I and our neighbors, are in His image, in so far as through our free will we are the main cause of our own works. In other words, we have been created with intelligence and freedom of will, and we should use that intelligence for making the best (=good) choices because we are the cause of the results and we bear the responsibility. Key to responsibility is the response part, we have to respond for what we do.

While it’s true some people among us misuse and abuse those gifts of intelligence and free will, the rest of us can do our best to use our gifts wisely and, perhaps, with charity and perseverence, bring them back to the Good.

We The People Presented So-Called Agenda 21 “Expert” John Anthony (Sustainable Freedom Lab) to Blather On for More than One-and-One-Half Hours of Brainwashing (Most Were brain-dead After the First 20 or So Minutes of Anthony’s Diatribe) of  A Near-Full House of Locals on Anthony’s Own “Be Suspicious Agenda”

John Anthony of SFL

John Anthony of SFL
The only one we know of who can talk longer than Obama and actually make less sense!

Even more damning than a damned boring exposure to propagandist blather is the slap in the face at the end, when there is no time allocated for comments or for questions and answers. What were the organizers afraid of? Yeah, sure, they might have had to put facts where their cake holes were. It’s much safer to spew your venom and then beat it before anyone comes up with a real question requiring real facts. But I blame the organizers of this despicable event; they could have done better and could have presented a fairer and more balanced discussion of both sides of the Agenda 21 topic as a moderated panel discussion. It would have provided insights into both sides of the proposal and would have allowed more information exchange.

So, dear readers, the downside of the experience was the whole experience. The upside was that there was no charge to attend (but there was a collection dish in the middle of tables) and there was a cash bar (which eased the overall pain a bit). You can now read our complete report on the rantings of a very confused toxic dwarf from New Jersey. You can also  review the recording we made of the dog-and-pony-act (which we’ve made available at the end of this article so you can decide for yourself whether the guy is a prophet or a lunatic; our money is on the lunatic part). If you’re one of the unfortunates who sat through the angry dwarf’s gleeful moment of self-gratification before an almost live audience, tossing books and vomiting random misinformation, you may benefit from our commentary. (If you click the Follow Me button at the top right of this page you can receive an automatic e-mail notification when our comments are published.)

John Anthony, a New Jersey businessman-turned-anxiety-monger, was invited by the organization calling itself We the People, to present his rather confused views about an action plan called Agenda 21.  First of all, here are the organizations who put on the presentation at a local restaurant in Coxsackie:

We the People describes (Tom DeWeese) itself as

“Citizens dedicated to preserving a Constitutional Republic ruled by law and the concept that sovereignty resides in We The People.” [Source: We The People site at http://wethepeopleusa.ning.com/ last visited on February 17, 2013]

Sustainable Freedoom Lab (SFL) (John Anthony) describes itself as”…changing the fight to protect our freedoms.  We provide unique tools to expose and turn the tables on officials, planners, federal agencies and non-governmental organizations who attempt to infringe upon your rights.”

When I see expressions like “ruled by law,” (I’d rather be ruled by justice, not “law”) “sovereignty resides in We the People,” (I’m not sure whether they mean that sovereignty resides in the group “We the People” or if We the People is referring to the opening lines of the Constitution. Whatever they mean, it’s unclear. Unclear pretty much sums up everything they have to say, too!). [Source: Sustainable Freedom Lab (SFL) site at http://sustainablefreedomlab.org/ last visited on February 17, 2013]

I also get a bit uneasy when I see Sustainable Freedom Lab (what’s the “Lab” in there for, anyway? Are we a bunch of lab rats being toyed with by these organizations?) using phrases like “changing the fight,” (What “fight”? I thought we were in this together, not opponents!?!), “turn the tables on officials, planners, federal agencies, and non-governmental organizations” (Who’s left, I wonder?), and the buzzy, prick-up-your-ears cliché, “infringe on your rights.” What rights? Do we have any left after Andrew Cuomo, Obama, the Supreme Court, and David Soares mangle and distort the Constitution, and purloin and give our rights to the corporations? What’s left?  I have to ask you?

Mr Anthony Was Nothing Less than At Best A Crazed Preacher, More Sinister, though, A Propagandist.

Mr Anthony Was Nothing Less than At Best A Crazed Preacher, More Sinister, though, A Propagandist.

Actually, this experience woke me up to what’s out there and what the real agenda has been and continues to be: Mr Anthony, despite what he preaches, and preach he certainly does, is nothing less than a propagandist who is promoting the despicable message of anxiety, fear, and mistrust that has been plaguing the ignorant and the misguided of this country for years. Mr Anthony is nothing less than one of those crazed fire-and-brimstone preachers of satan, hell and damnation we cringe from when we see them on the idiot box or in those old films. But he’s continuing what was started after 911 and in the so-called Patriot Act: he’s keeping everybody paralyzed in a state of high anxiety and fear.

Mr Anthony’s talk, and man can he t-a-l-k — he went on for more than 90 minutes, starting more than a half-hour late — foaming at the mouth in an avalanche of doctored or dubious factoids and figures, waving several thick books with long titles, spewing cryptic abbreviations and acronyms, waving maps no one could clearly identify, running off bulleted lists and quotes on a projection screen, all doom and gloom, nothing substantial, nothing to educate or illuminate, but everything presented to obfuscate, to blur, to confuse. Do we really need our local political leaders to expose us to that sort of shite?

mellting face

The More He Ranted, the More the Real John Anthony Came Through.

As Anthony ranted on and on about this statistic and that statistic, his true person started to come through. This man who was touted as an “expert,” who first introduced himself to the audience as a “businessman” and midway through the talk morphed into a “historian,” didn’t know shit from Shinola, and was hell bent to spread his ignorance to the some 100 lemmings assembled in the room and mostly seniors, farmers, a smattering of local politicos, and a handful of 30-40-somethings who liked talking about not turning in their guns. But none of them appeared to be awake, much less following the unintelligible brayings of a fanatic, anti-government jackass!

John Anthony Went from Passionate Preacher, to Poking Propagandist, to Braying Jackass Before Our Eyes.

John Anthony Went from Passionate Preacher, to Poking Propagandist, to Braying Jackass Before Our Eyes.
(Well, actually, it took all of 90 minutes to happen.)

Of course the local media was there, if you can call the Hudson Catskill Newspapers, the “media.” In fact, just hours after the fanatic diatribe, Kyle Adams of the Catskill Daily Mail rushed to post his take on the event. Adams makes a feeble attempt to make best use of his ignorance, to make sense out of what was going on in the room but fails miserably (as most of the so-called journalists at the Hudson Catskill Newspapers tend to do.  They’re such creatures of habit. So eager to please their keepers.)  Far be it from us to make a statement without allowing our readers to decide for themselves. Heres a link to the Adams item that was published on the Catskill Daily Mail online edition: Coxsackie forum warns against dangers of sustainable development.

And, by the way, Kyle Adams, you are grossly misleading when you write, “State Assemblyman Peter Lopez, R-Schoharie, who also attended to learn more about Agenda 21.”  Peter Lopez showed up about 10 minutes before the presentation mercifully ended. (I know because I was sitting by the door when he arrived and his cell phone promptly made a disturbance!)  Mr Lopez, therefore, had no opportunity to either know what Mr Anthony was ranting about at all. Even if Lopez had shown up at the beginning of the presentation he wouldn’t have learned very much about Agenda 21, anyway. But Mr Lopez showed up at the end of the presentation, he did not “attend” as you incorrectly report, Mr Adams.

Now for the simple truth. No waving thick books in the air. No obscure statitisics. No doom and gloom. No propaganda. Just the plain, honest truth, something Mr John Anthony was unable to deliver at the so-called “forum”. (We’re not going to go into the substance of Agenda 21. Those of you who are interested in the range of opinions can find something to your liking by simply Googling “Agenda 21.” There’s something for everyone but read it with an open mind, please.)

Mr Anthony waved a lot of books around and spewed a lot of factoids in those agonizing 90 minutes. But the impression he made was that he was not being truthful. I say this because during his rant he clearly was preaching against “officials, planners, federal agencies and non-governmental organizations” as we can read in the description of his organization, Sustainable Freedom Lab, but he was giving only his ignorant interpretation. In fact, when I confronted him with a question about one of the books he suggested the audience download and read (it was a free publication of reports about Sustainable Development, Our Common Future), Mr Anthony responded that he was “not for or against anything, he was not supporting or opposing anything.” That’s clearly not the message he sent when delivering his rant (I’m providing a link to the entire rant, which I taped, at the end of this article). In fact, he failed to deliver the truth, a definition of Sustainable Development, taken directly from the very book he was flashing throughout the talk, Our Common Future, and invited those present to download and read. That definition contradicted just about everything Mr Anthony was preaching that afternoon:

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts:

  • the concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world’s poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and
  • the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment’s ability to meet present and future needs.”

That’s an important definition if we are to discuss sustainable development in any way whatsoever. In fact, all definitions of sustainable development ask us to  we see the world as a system—a system that connects space, and a system that connects time.

Who today can avoid acknowledging that our entire existence depends on our accepting that everything in the world is interconnected and in a delicate balance. When you envision the world as a system whose effects move  over space, you grow to understand that air pollution from North America affects air quality in Asia and vice versa, and that pesticides sprayed in Argentina could harm fish stocks off the coast of New England!

And when you think of the world as a system over time, you start to realize that the decisions our grandparents made about how to farm or otherwise develop the land continue to affect our land use or abuse today; and the economic policies we endorse today will have an impact on economic policies when our children are adults. Just think for a moment about the effects of deforestation and desertification and their negative influence on climate and weather! Depleting the Amazonian rain forest and clearing forests in India is making a mess out of our weather patterns!

We also understand that quality of life is a system, too. It’s good to be physically healthy, but what if you are poor and don’t have access to education? It’s good to have a secure income, but what if the air in your part of the world is unclean? And it’s good to have freedom of religious expression, but what if you can’t feed your family?

The concept of sustainable development is rooted in this sort of systems thinking. It helps us understand ourselves and our world. The problems we face are complex and serious—and we can’t address them in the same way we created them. But we can address them. But Mr John Anthony doesn’t provide solutions. The fact that he got to say what he wanted to say over those agonizing 90 minutes but did not end with a comment period or an opportunity to ask questions was a sure sign that his was a hit-and-run ambush act! He did nothing to simplify the situation nor to clarify it. Here’s what sustainable development looks like in a very simple, easy to understand form:

sustainable

The real monsters are us, our perverse greedy, self-centered, insatiable individual avarice and gluttony.

Here’s the real story behind sustainable development and it’s not a horror story about people losing their rights or private property being gobbled up by some monster from the cannibal culture of the United Nations or government agencies! Let’s stop with the idiotic witch hunts looking for monsters and start doing some soul-searching of our own. The real monsters are us, our perverse greedy, self-centered, insatiable individual avarice and gluttony.

And puhleez don’t start with the idiotic speculations that the now 30-year old voluntary action plan is going to erase private property rights and implement a diabolical program of population control. If you really want to be scared shiteless just read some of the lunatic stuff on Catholic Answers, a site that describes its purpose as “to defend and explain the faith.” (Here’s the link: Agenda 21: United Nations’ erases private property for green-ism.) Seems there are more nuts out there than in a holiday fruitcake! Bless their poor demented souls!

If we want to survive in the terms of the definition of sustainable development taken from the book Our Common Future, we need to make it a firmly rooted, long-term reality by first working in community to create a truly sustainable economy. The fear and anxiety propagandists only offer one side of the coin, the tarnished side, and are always pointing to the “other” as the enemy. We, you and I, have to take responsibility.

All human, all economic activity is dependent on a healthy Nature, a healthy world!

No matter how you look at it our economy is based on nature. Yes, the Nature we’re constantly trying to destroy to satisfy our appetites for more, More, MORE. It’s time we took a step back and recognized that we are a part of the Nature we are destroying; that we are in an intimate relationship with Nature. The foundation of our survival is in the soil, water, air, and environmental concerns have to be first understood by US, and we then must inform our policy makers that we need to stop our suicidal policies. All human, all economic activity is dependent on a healthy Nature, a healthy world!

We are citizens of the universe, the world, the created order and we have really gone off the deep end; we need real ecological and economic conversation. The environmental problem is the direct consequence of our economic activity of our greed, of the corporations and short-term profits and short-term solutions. Those negative environmental consequences are long-term and must be first among our national and international priorities. The environmental question is not just an ethical and scientific problem, it’s a political and economic problem.

We need to place greater emphasis on renewable energy, fuels and cleaner technologies, for starters.  We have to do a hell of a lot more to stop and reverse current trends in consumption and pollution. And where does that start? Not in the halls of Washington or the UN, not in the government agencies, not in non-governmental organization as Mr Anthony would have you believe. It starts in your own homes, in your kitchens, in your living rooms, in your town halls!

sustainable word cloud

OK, if fossil fuels are going to be with us for “the foreseeable future” and if the governments are going to settle for “hybrid options in the energy mix”, then serious public investment in clean technology must accompany this pragmatism as an urgent part of national and international strategies to diminish as fast as possible the impact of air and sea transport pollution and those sectors’ continued use of outdated technology. That’s what Agenda 21 is proposing. Not depriving anyone of life, liberty, happiness or private property. Agenda 21 is an action plan, a voluntary program, that will ensure life, liberty, happiness and private enjoyment of property for the present and for the future. But we didn’t hear that from Mr Anthony…he has his own agendas.

It's Not Tree Hugging!<br />It's Embracing a Future for Life!

The principle of subsidiarity requires the participation of local communities in the decision-making process

We’ve all heard about the future fresh water crisis, and it’s real. Melting polar ice, crazy record droughts, freakish storms, unparalleled flooding, crops rotting, cattle dying, shortages, and the list can go on. Do you really doubt that it’s connected with our patterns of abuse of Nature and our patterns of consumption. Do you really doubt that we’re on a suicidal binge of waste and misuse? Think of a basic survival need, water: the fulfillment of water requirements is not the lack of sufficient water for human needs but that of the proper stewardship, care and administration of our water resources. We’ve all heard or read about the privatization of water resources, where corporations are buying up municipal water resources with a view  of making a profit by selling the natural resource back to the people.  This certainly  highlights the  problems of rogue corporations, wild-eyed greed, the need for ethical management of infrastructure, technology, and finances. Governance of water resources must be based on the implementation of the principle of responsibility shared at all levels, especially the local, right on through the regional, state, national and  international level, with particular attention to the principle of subsidiarity, which requires the participation of local communities in the decision-making process.

Desertification and drought now affect more than one in six of the world’s population.

The UN designated 2006 as the International Year of Deserts and Desertification, and drew international attention to one of the most alarming processes of environmental degradation. Desertification has  a strong negative influence not only on the environment but also in economic and social fields. Desertification and drought now affect more than one in six of the world’s population.

We should be well aware that too little of our own, personal, local effort has been made to safeguard the moral conditions for an authentic human ecology. Such an authentic human  ecology will place the human person at the centre, not at the top, dear readers,  of environmental concerns, while at the same time promoting an urgent sense of human responsibility for the Earth, be it at the level of the individual single household, local communities, states, commerce. Everything starts and ends with the individual person: YOU and I.

Good environmental policies are by extension good people policies too.

Back to water. Water. by 2025, a third of the world’s nations will have catastrophically low levels of water. Even today, 34,000 people die every day for lack of clean water: one and a half billion people do not have access to clean water, a figure which could rise to 3 billion by 2025. We, right here in town, experience water restrictions almost regularly so how can we continue ignoring our involvement in a global problem?

We need desperately to find a balance. We don't need more anxiety preachers!

We need desperately to find a balance.
We don’t need more anxiety preachers!

We can no longer go on pretending that our individual greed and that human activity has little or no negative impact on resources that are essential to our survival.

In terms of food security or ensuring that there’s enough feed our populations. Changing climactic conditions have had a devastating effect in this area. Newsweek recently published a feature article on foods that will disappear from our tables if we don’t take some concerted action to change our destructive habits. We can no longer pretend that human activity has little or no impact on these matters. (Anyone notice smaller food packaging, less content, higher prices? Less for more. Is that the UN conspiracy or the corporations at work?)

Energy is central to achieving sustainable development goals; improving access to reliable, affordable and environmentally friendly energy services is a major challenge to the eradication of poverty, the fostering of social justice, of ensuring enough for all. Nature, creation, the environment is not private property, it’s our common inheritance from the Divine. Get with the program, people! It starts with Genesis but not the corporations or the John Anthony interpretation of it. You are not at the top of creation, you are at most at the center of creation and by occupying that position, you have a very grave responsibility…and you’ve made a bloody mess of it.

Reliance in industry, transport, commerce and defence upon traditional combustion engines is already a century old

The transportation sector is another devilish problem we need to seriously and urgently deal with. Reliance in industry, transport, commerce and defence upon traditional combustion engines is already a century old.  For several reasons, their replacement with clean, renewable alternatives is long overdue.

The Earth’s climate system has demonstrably changed on both global and regional scales since the pre-industrial era. The global warming trend and sea-level rise would continue for hundreds of years, due to the atmospheric lifetime of some greenhouse gases and the long timescales on which the deep ocean adjusts to climate change.

Who can seriously doubt or argue against the fact that the dovetailing of environmental and developmental concerns with commercial and industrial policymaking will surely lead to a safer, more prosperous future for all. But no nation can achieve this alone.

We need to start acting like mature citizens and stewards of creation and admit our part in the damage done and take responsibility for our part in healing it!

Apart from the myriad clichés, the single point that John Anthony made and with which  I must admit to agreeing with is this: We need to push our elected officials to work with our communities to ensure our survival.

Yes, dear readers, you need to stop wallowing in your own misery and anxiety and do something about it. You and I have the power to make these changes work. You and I have to demand these changes. You and I have to make these changes. You and I have to take urgent steps to make our elected officials know that we will no longer play the village idiots for the corporations or the special interests. We are the ones who are paying the price and the ultimate price will be our survival. We need to stop the shortsightedness and tell people like John Anthony who want to force feed us with more anxiety and more negativity to Shut the hell up! We need to start acting like mature citizens and stewards of creation and admit our part in the damage done and take responsibility for our part in healing it! In otherwords, Grow up! Ante up! Or shut up!

Time to put our own SPIN on things!

Time to put our own SPIN on things!
Time for us to take responsibility, to take control!

Mr Anthony had the audacity to call himself an historian. Purest rubbish! Mr Anthony proved his ignorance by making the statement that “social justice” or “social option” was  coined about 40 years ago, about the time the notion of sustainable development was born. That’s simply not true! In fact, social justice is a prominent theme in the Gospels, in the Old Testament prophets. It was made part of the official  teaching of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Leo XIII’s peerless Encyclical, On the Condition of Workers, “On Capital and Labor,” and later in Pope Pius XI’s “On Reconstruction of the Social Order” (1931). The notion of social justice was further developed by great humanitarians like Dorothy Day, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and before them the Buddha and Christ! 800 years ago St Francis of Assisi was teaching social justice and most faith traditions continue some form of social justice and social options! Where have you been, Mr Anthony?!?

So, in conclusion, if you have 90 minutes on a Sunday and don’t know how to spend them, may I recommend that if you want to hear preaching, take those 90 minutes and spend them in Sunday worship. At least there you might pick up something from the more than 2000 years of wisdom that might constructively help you to cope with the anxiety people like John Anthony and his ilk are foisting on an almost daily basis .

As promised, here is the link to the recording of the entire Anthony rant, if you’d like to listen or download it: John Anthony Rant, or right-click the link to download the audio file.

We regret any confusion …

We Have Received Some Comments That Indicate To Us That There Is Some Confusion Regarding The Operator Of The RC Teen Activity Center And A Very Popular Teacher At The RCS Middle School.

appreciation

While we have made it very clear that we are not bashing anyone and that we are simply asking important questions relating to the RC Teen Activity Center, some of our readers have risen to the occasion to defend their “Mr Fisher.” I was very curt and blunt with one commenter who seemed to have been confused and vigorously defended her “Mr Fisher.” I now understand her confusion and I’d like to conditionally apologize for the rough treatment s/he received at my hands.

To be clear: Mr Michael Fisher is the operator of the RC Teen Activity Center in Ravena. Mr William Fisher is a teacher at the RCS Middle School. On this blog we are discussing only the RC Teen Activity Center and Mr Michael Fisher not the RCS Middle School and Mr William Fisher.

dropped the ballMr William Fisher is a very popular and loved teacher at the RCS Middle School and we have that on very reliable authority: some of his students and several parents. So, Mr William Fisher we would like to congratulate you on a very special reputation you have obviously earned at the RCS Middle School. While there may have been some confusion in the names, what ultimately came out in all of this is your fine reputation! So we conditionally apologize to you for any anxiety we may have caused to you!

We do want to emphasize, too, that there is no reason whatsoever to believe that Mr Michael Fisher of the RC Teen Activity Center is not attempting to do good for the community. We support all that is good in this community. Our points made on this blog critique only a number of concerns and inconsistencies that we have noted in the leadership and organization of the RC Teen Activity Center. The leadership and organization is not the product of a single person but is the result of many interrelated factors and interactions of a number of people and agencies. We do not want to make the impression that we are singling out Mr Michael Fisher as an individual nor do we want to distract from his basic intentions.

As always, we want to continue our policy of truth and correctness and we intend always to publicize and own up to any misunderstandings we may inadvertently have caused. That policy is what makes us credible and reliable.

We thank you for your trust and confidence, and your loyalty!
