Stupidity, Ignorance, Corruption: Do you know the difference? Faith Plaza is Sinking!

Some readers have called us pessimists and they’re dead wrong. You see, we’re actually realists, because we see things as they are, make no excuses, and ask Why?

That requires us to be able to differentiate among stupidity, ignorance, corruption and plain old crookedness; that’s something most Ravena-Coeymans- New Baltimore locals don’t seem to be able to get a handle on. So we’re going to provide a couple of illustrations to help those of you along, who don’t quite have a grasp on realism.

A number of years ago, during the reign of terror under former Ravena mayor Bailey, the Flachs purchased the marshland on which Faith Plaza was built. No doubt the entire business deal was crooked because not only was mayor Bailey involved but local shyster John Biscone, father of the current Ravena shyster, Michael Biscone, was also involved. So the Flachs lay down cold hard cash, get the property, and somehow manage to get approval to build on the marshland property that served as a catch basin for drainage from the streams and runoff. The deal to let the Flachs get the property and develop it was stupid and corrupt. Building on the marshland was stupid and ignorant. Now, anyone with eyes to see, can see that the parking lot is sinking. It’s probably only a matter of time until we read about the sinkhole and how many cars got swallowed up.

That’s one of the reasons why Ravena and Coeymans basements and cellars are cesspools of flooding water. Ask the brilliant engineers of Flach & Company why that is. You may also want to ask where the Department of Environmental Conservation was when all of this is happening? But then, just as in the case of the Conrad-Biscone involvement in the case of the disappearing creek on Camille Drive in Ravena, when the right hands are padded, the Department of Environmental Conservation looks for other victims to harrass. After all, it distracts the public’s attention from the real criminals and the real violations.

Sinkholes form when water dissolves minerals in the bedrock or in the sublayers of the ground leaving the structures on top of the ground sitting precariously on loose soil that can quickly wash away.

If a sinkhole is in the process of forming the structures on top of it can give a hint to its existence: for example, slumping or sagging areas in a parking lot or road, and trees that start to lean. More subtle signs can include doors and windows that don’t close properly.

Heavy rains can caus the collapse of a sinkhole that had been slowly forming earlier. When rainfall collects in an area where water previously did not collect, that is another sign that the land is subsiding.


Here’s another example from recent local history: A local man is growing a crop of marihuana plants in his home. That’s stupid. The Coeymans police get a tip from a local druggie that the guy has an illegal weapon in his home, and the Coeymans police go to a local jackass town justice, Mr Dardiani, and get an illegal search warrant. That’s stupid and ignorant. The Coeymans police intimidate the guy’s minor kid and interrogate him at the RCS high school. That’s stupid, ignorant, and very likely illegal in some important respects. The Coeymans police enforce the search warrant and forcibly enter the guys home but don’t find the illegal weapon but find the pot crop. That’s just plain lucky. The Coeymans police with the help of a now defeated Coeymans town board member and others (Tom Dolan, Tom Boehm, Dawn Rogers) exaggerate the entire thing to get press just before the elections. That’s stupid and corruptBoehm and Rogers lose the election. Dolan looks stupid, and loses not only elections for the Democraps but loses all credibility. That’s brilliant!

Bridge to reroute port traffic away from local roads”, a report by Bryan Rowzee that appeared in the June 5, 2014, issue of the Ravena News Herald is another case in support of our subject.

Mr Rowzee continues his typical boot-licking dog-and-pony act by attempting to misinform and befuddle the readers of the Ravena Rag by putting a falsely positive and unrealistic slant on the Carver Companies, Port of Coeymans and Coeymans Industrial Park plans to take over a portion of Riverview Drive for their own use, and to build a private bridge, intended to connect the Riverview Drive with the Port of Coeymans and the Coeymans Industrial Park (all Carver properties). Unfortunately, Mr Rowzee again gets sucked into reporting only what the special interests want him to write and not what serves the public’s interest. Here’s why:

No one in the Town of Coeymans or the Village of Ravena seems to get it! The basic problem is the fact that our roads were never constructed to handle the heavy truck traffic at all. That’s the problem. The braniacs in town and village hall don’t seem to have eyes in their heads or the sense to realize that the roads are being devastated because they were never built to accommodate the huge trucks of today!

Contracy to Ravena mayor Misuraca’s assessment of why Ravena’s water mains are constantly rupturing (Misuraca seems to put all the blame on the fact that they’re old), Moose the Mayor for some reason has completely ignored and overlooked the fact that trucks weighing multiple tons traveling over the village streets create such vibrations that they literally destroy the water conduits over which they travel! Old may be part of the problem but it’s not the complete story, Mr Mayor Moose! Rome Italy is still using water mains that were built by the Romans more than 2000 years ago and they, sir, are old! But Rome doesn’t have trucks weighing dozens of tons running over them dozens of times a day, either. The village of Ravena does!

Solution: Reduce the heavy truck traffic running through Ravena all day long. The village streets were never meant for such traffic. At some point (real soon) you may want to start thinking like a mayor with an understanding ot fhe complete picture, too.

Back to the Carver Controversy: If it weren’t a sure sign that something was amiss when the town of Coeymans rushed the zoning changes through. If it weren’t a surer sign that something was crooked when the re-zoning was declared illegal. And if it weren’t a sure sign that something was getting even more crooked when the old bait-and-switch line was used, “There’ll be a bunch of new jobs created.” Yeah! That’s what we heard when they put up the Athens generating plant. Horse apples!

Readers: Use your God-given common sense, your familiarity with the lay of the land, and your recent experience. Here we have monster trucks now coming in and out of Riverview, an area that was never intended for such traffic but that’s moot. They’re there and that’s the bad news. The good news, well, almost good, is that at least by the time you get to the bridge over the Coeymans creek  you can clearly see them pulling out in front of you, and you can take evasive action. (That’s not true when they are coming down the hill and entering 144 from Ravena Main Street/Church Street. That’s a death trap!)

The planned route is going to be even more problematic. Entering Coeymans from the North, we approach at about 55 mph, see a 30 mph sign going into the curve, but you don’t see beyond the first 100-200 feet. In that very same curve is the entrance to the Port of Coeymans, the very place where the Coeymans cops used to — still do — wait in ambush for unwary drivers who don’t reduce their speed to 30 mph by the time they reach that point. That was great for the cops because the curve in the road provided excellent cover, and the short distance between the transition from 55 to 30 mph required some quick motor skills going into the curve. Well, that’s exactly where we undertand the Carver bridge will open up and cross 144. And they’ll have two lanes, apparently one lane crossing in either direction. Ladies and gentlemen, dear readers, the only ones who are going to benefit from this arrangement are Carver Laraway and Babcock Funeral Home.

The current situation is already dire. Anyone driving along SR 144 both in the Hamlet of Coeymans and just beyond the Lafarge crossing — that very crossing should be a glaring example of what to expect if Laraway puts in another heavy truck crossing just down the road, in Coeymans—has surely experienced the trucks pulling out of the so-called Port and putting you at risk of life and limb. They just pull out. Period. No one seems to care that they have to share the road with you.

But it’s worse still. Not only to they just pull out in front of you, they don’t have the sense to wait until smaller, faster traffic passes and they can then pull out and travel at 20 mph for the first couple of miles, reaching 30 mph in about 2 miles, maybe 40 mph in about 5 miles. They’re in a real hurry to get nowhere! In the meantime, they’re trying to cream you and leave your kids orphans.

But it does get worse still. There’s the dust! If the trucks don’t get you, the dust will! The trucks are raising mountains of dust not only in the port itself but even once they are on SR 144. Here are just some for-instances:

  • Visibility. On a sunny, dry day, the dust clouds create a zero visibility situation. That’s very dangerous, especially when you think that other trucks are entering from one of the other entrances/exits to the port or from Lafarge.
  • Your car’s air filter. Travel SR 144 a couple of times a day, driving throught those dust clouds, and just think about how often you’re going to have to change your cars air filter. Only Nappa wins on this point.
  • How often to you wash your car now? Well drive down SR144 during the hours the trucks are in operation and you can pretty much double those washings. And think about the damage to the paint job with all those tiny sandpaper particles grinding away at it. Only Flach’s carwash is a winner on this point.
  • And your clothes? Do you think that when you walk, drive or ride in the area where the wind is carrying all that dust and dropping it on your community that your clothes or your furnishings are going to be spared. Think again! Here’s were Flach and his laudramat and drycleaning business are going to make a killing, too.
  • But the worst is yet to come. Think of your lungs! It’s bad enough when you can avoid driving on SR 144 and avoid the dust clouds and the hazardous drivers of those heavy trucks but the large particles are not the culprits in serious lung diseases caused by airborne dust. It’s the very small particles that lodge in the lungs and cause serious lung diseases, or aggravate the lung diseases people are already suffering. Airborne dust contains not only particles that can cause restrictive and obstructive lung diseases, aggravate allergies, those dusts also contain toxins and heavy metals that are deadly. Dear readers, Obamacare isn’t going to help you here. You’d better invest in high-efficiency particle filter face masks—or stock up on oxygen canisters. Albany Medical Center and its satellite clinics are going to make a bundle on this baby.
  • Our Homeland. We’ll just round this brief discussion off with a final note on our beautiful Hudson Valley, the lush green of our summers, the beautiful air from the foothills of the Catskills—Kiss it all goodby thanks to the total stupidity, ignorance and corruption of our local elected officials. They’ve sold our health and our homes for Judas’ silver, and they’re after our health, too!

So, dear readers, before you lick up Mr Bryan Rowzee’s boot-licking reports and stooge Andrea Colby’s propaganda, and before you swallow Coeymans town supervisor Stephen Flach’s ignorant and uninformed pablum, lend an ear to concerned and serious local residents like Elyse Kunz and Barbara Heinzen, they’re being realistic in condemning this ill-fated and corrupt plan to destroy not only the character of the hamlet and the village, but threaten our very lives and health, while destroying irreplaceable habitat. And for what? To fill the pockets of the few! To cow to false and unrealistic promises of prosperity? We’ve heard it all before and we’ve suffered immensely for trusting them.

Stop them NOW before it’s too late.

Mr Bryan Rowzee reported in that same issue of the Ravena News Herald on “Should backyard chickens be allowed in Ravena?” Now that’s certainly a monumental concern when compared to the Carver Laraway destruction projects. Maybe Mr Rowzee should restrict his writing to discussions of backyard chickens. The Ravena News Herald gave the chickens as much space in the June 5th issue of the Ravena Rag as it did to the Bridge scandal. What does that tell you?

    The water main breaks you refer to are on STATE hwy 143. Not a village,town or county road. Are you saying that the state roads aren’t built to state specs and can’t handle traffic?

      We are all painfully aware of where the water main breaks, and the other water delivery and sewerage problems are. We have eyes to see. But thank you none-the-less for the additional information about the problems on SR 143.

      Rereading our article, we are saying what we are saying. We made no statement as to the compliance of the roadway construction with “state specs”; whether they are or are not does not alter the physical and real fact that the roads are substandard and unable to handle the heavy traffic. This is clearly observable to anyone who observes the destruction of the roads and the behavior of the traffic. There is not good reason why these road are so horribly torn up and why they should require such frequent repair. Either the specs are crap, the workmanship is crap, the materials used is crap or all of the above.

      Case in point: For almost two weeks a crew of at least six employees plus heavy equipment were engaged with tearing up part of SR 144 just under the Lafarge conveyor line, at the point where the trucks cross SR 144. They apparently finished their little stint there and apparently they are done. Now that section of repair has more waves than Oahu surfer paradize. Driving over that bit of “repair” will get you seasick it’s so uneven. We suppose it was repaired according to state specs, right, Jim? Pretty crappy job, to be honest. State specs, huh?

      Moreover, it is clearly obvious, even without faulting the “state specs” that the roads are not even wide enough to safely contain the heavy truck traffic; if you have eyes to see, you will be able to frequently observe their inability to choose a lane and stay in it, and we’re not talking about making a sharp turn; we’re talking about operating on a straight stretch of road. All you have to do is note where the wheels are on the approaching behemoth and try to steer clear.
