So, on that note, we would like to take this opportunity to Salute! the spirit of the Halfway House and congratulate them on the wonderful thing they did for the suspended RCS seniors, who may have missed their senior picnic!
Thank you! Halfway House! What you did was in the best spirit of good community and we tip our hats to you, humbly and gratefully!
We recall that our very American democracy was designed in a community tavern just like the Halfway House…perhaps the new RCS democracy will be incubated there, too!

It is a shame, but you have to admit that the kids really pulled off a great prank. No harm was done. Leave it alone, or it could backfire. What do we have to look forward to next year?

Sure we could. But NO ONE else came forward. The HALFWAY HOUSE DID! Where were the churches, the businesses? The KIDS’ FAMILIES? They could all have come forward and could have made a gesture, a statement. Fact is: They Didn’t! The BAR did!
Forget the media…that bunch of starving rats. They’re worse than lawyers!

Not saying about the sponsorship.. just the location. Would have been pretty easy to have a blast at Mosher Park for the day.
It’s a pretty unpopular opinion to mention that the entire experience has been lost on these kids, now that they were celebrated anyways.
I put to you a hypothetical: If one of the kids on skateboards had slipped on the confetti and fell down a half flight of stairs, breaking an arm or leg, would our opinion of the incident be different? I would wager that some, but not all of course, of the people lambasting the school over discipline in this matter would instead be lambasting the school over why these kids were able to get into the school in the first place. Parents would be suing the school for the negligence of them being able to get in and getting hurt. The fact that nothing happened during this prank shouldn’t detract from the fact that the kids were in the school when they weren’t supposed to be. It’s clearly laid out in the student handbook given to all the kids. People complain when someone who (supposedly) accidentally left a shotgun in his trunk doesn’t have the book thrown at him, yet in this situation they want the documented policies swept under a rug and let these kids off. Yes, the shotgun is a more severe issue with (potentially) greater end results, but I hope you get my basic point. As you have pointed out numerous times, one of the big issues in our school and our community is that people are picking and choosing when they want to enforce the rules.
I know several of these kids, even speaking with some in great detail. These are all good kids. However in the same vein of complaining when the coppers in Coeymans are up to antics and there’s no consequences for them, this situation is one of those where a greater lesson about there being consequences even in the “harmless pranks” will hopefully make these good kids even better adults.
My only regret is putting a photo in the papers (and television media) all smiling for the camera is negating any lesson about consequences for actions. It’s instead making them resent the school for enforcing the rules (for a change).

Hi! As you might have heard or if you are the slumming sort, read in the Times Useless, that the 29 students identified in the RCS senior Post-It prank were not only suspended but banned from their RCS senior picnic by the administrators (Brian Bailey and Elizabeth Smith) as part of their “discipline.” The Ravena Halfway House honored them by throwing a picnic for them.
We have not been particularly kind to the Halfway House in Ravena because some RCS adult delinquents have made it their haunt. What we’d like to admit is that we may have been too hasty in judging the place by the customers (some of them’); it’s not the establishment’s fault who crawls in. We really feel that the Halfway House owners did a very fine community-spirited thing by hosting that picnic.
